An Ancient Carpet in Urumchi by Chris Walter From Oriental Rug Review, Vol. 8/2, December/January, 1988 The Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region Museum in Urumchi, capital of Xinjiang Region of China, formerly known as East Turkestan, holds an extremely rich collection of apparently very old carpets and other textiles. It appears that the importance of this collection, and some of the pieces in particular, is little known in the West and, I might venture to say, even in China or by the Museum itself. The subject carpet Writing in this publication a year ago ( ORR , Oct. 1986) I commented briefly on one intact carpet in particular which was dated by the museum to the Han Dynasty period (206 B.C .- 220 A.D.). This apparently met with incredulity from many quarters. It is well known by most people who concern themselves with the history of carpets and related textiles that the oldest knotted pile carpet ever found up to this point is the "Pazyryk Carpet", from a frozen tomb in the Altai Mountains of Siberia, dating from the 4th century B.C. Following this, the carpet which is recognized by many as being the second greatest in age, and about which much has been written in the last year ( ORR , 1987), is the so called "Fostat Carpet", purportedly found in a rubbish heap near Cairo and having been dated, with some contention, from the 9th century A.D. The Fostat Rug, unlike the Pazyryk, is far from complete. Does there exist another knotted pile rug which is intact, virtually complete, and is far older than the Fostat fragment, though still remaining second in age to the Pazyryk Carpet? Such would seem to be the case.

BOOK REVIEW TOPKAPI CARPETS Review by Charles Grant Ellis From Oriental Rug Review, Vol. 8/4, April/May,1988 Scholars In the field of Oriental carpets have been aware for many years of the existence of a highly interesting group of approximately 40 prayer rugs in the Topkapi Palace Museum in Istanbul. Only a few of them have ever been published, and those in a variety of places. The new edition of the Topkapi Carpets Survey of Persian Art and mentioned repeatedly by Kurt Erdmann. Plate 27 cimiscasachi It comes as a surprise that "it has recently come to be agreed...for the Hereke factory was originally established not for carpet-weaving at all.... The first evidence for carpet manufacture at Hereke, moreover, seems to occur in 1891...." One must wonder how solid this change of information may be and how long it will hold up! When mention is made elsewhere in the book to "carpets associated with Kashan or North-West Iran in the later sixteenth and the seventeenth centuries," it seems likely that the reference brings us right back to the "Salting class" of inscribed medallion rugs, contemporary with or slightly earlier than these prayer rugs. It now seems probable that practically every one of these inscribed rugs belongs to this class. And while these rugs were being so carefully considered, one must regret the omission of the three inscribed prayer rugs formerly in the Chihil Sutun at Isfahan published by Erdmann so obscurely (in Dacca) and the utterly ruinous example in the Yale University Art Gallery, with field related to Plate 24, touted by Pope in the

A Brief History of English Carpets, and the Stourvale Mill Kidderminster Carpets are a reversible flat weave carpet popular from the 18th century to the early 20th century. This form of carpeting has no pile and the pattern is shown in opposing colors on both faces, making it possible to turn the carpet over when one side was worn or soiled. In North America these carpets were commonly called Ingrain Carpet. None are woven today in the town of Kidderminster, but they are made still in small quantities in the United States, including designs by William Morris. Look at enlargement of Vine and Pomegranate Kidderminster (Ingrain) Carpet Axminster Carpets are the main product of Kidderminster today, but this product is a relative newcomer from the late 19th century. Taking the name of an earlier form of hand-knotted rug (the finest and most expensive English carpets), Chenille Axminsters, developed in 1839 by James Templeton of Glasgow, simulated the rich quality of the hand-knotted rugs and could weave room size seamless rugs (sadly, these are no longer made anywhere). Spool and gripper Axminsters were a later development that made a durable machine woven carpet with a thick pile, but of a more modest expense than other woven carpets. These are still made in large quantities for hotels, pubs, and residential use. William Morris and C.F.A. Voysey were among the famous designers who drew patterns for Axminster carpets.
