THE US VIRGIN ISLANDS encompass the individual isles of St. Thomas, St. John, St. Croix and Water Island. The largest island is St. Croix (28 miles long and 7 miles wide). St. Thomas is 40 miles to the north of St. Croix. It is 13 miles long and 3 miles wide. St. John is 9 miles long and 5 miles wide. Two-thirds of St. John is a national park donated to the government in 1956 by philanthropist Laurance S. Rockefeller. Water Island sits just off the southwest coast of St. Thomas and is almost exclusively a residential community. HISTORY: It was 1493 — during Christopher Columbus' second voyage to the New World— when these islands first became known to the European community. Over the centuries that followed, Spain, France, England, The Netherlands, Denmark took turns controlling the region. The United States purchased the islands from Denmark for $25 million in 1917. At that time, the US government was concerned this area might become a German submarine base if Denmark fell to the Germans during World War I. Since that time, the islands have remained a US territory.

Feedback Contact Us Caribbean Tourism Summit to Follow Nassau Heads of Government Conference Governor General Prime Minister The Cabinet The Senate ... by Earl Bousquet Nassau, The Bahamas - July 6, 2001 : CARICOM Heads of Government opened their 22 nd Summit in Nassau, The Bahamas capital, on Tuesday evening with calls for crucial decisions to be made on several outstanding issues and agreeing to later this year host a Caribbean Tourism Summit proposed by St. Lucia’s Prime Minister, Dr Kenny D. Anthony. Tourism featured during the opening ceremony at the National Centre for Performing Arts, with several speakers underlining the increasingly greater importance of the sector to the Caribbean’s economic survival. The Bahamas Prime Minister, who is host and new Chairman of CARICOM, called for “continued competitiveness in tourism” and urged his counterparts at the meeting to “put tourism at its rightful place in the development of the Caribbean.” In this regard, Mr. Ingraham revealed that a Caribbean Tourism Summit proposed by St. Lucia’s Prime Minister Dr Kenny Anthony will be held to seriously consider issues related to the sector, which is of increasing importance for the economic survival of CARICOM member-states. The meeting was originally scheduled to take place in the Bahamas immediately after the conclusion of the present summit.

Mr. Speaker, I move that the Bill shortly entitled the Appropriation Act, 2003 be read a second time and in so doing, I crave the customary indulgence of this Honourable House in permitting me to read my Budget Address. 2. It is customary and expected on this occasion that the person to whom the ministerial portfolio of Finance has been entrusted, would avail himself/herself of the opportunity to present the Territory's annual blue print or series of prescriptions for continued economic and social development in these treasured islands that we call home. I therefore, Mr. Speaker, have no intentions to break with tradition and, with God's help, I trust that I will meet, if not surpass, expectations. 3. Mr. Speaker, it is my intention to firstly begin by giving a brief overview of the current and future outlook of the World's economy and what impact this may have for our local circumstances. Secondly, I will recount a few domestic economic events and capsulate the most recent Budget Estimates of Revenue and Expenditure and the Capital Budget Estimates of Receipts and Expenditure for fiscal year 2003.

General The Library applies subject classification primarily to materials treated as monographs. Serial publications are separated by form and are assigned classification numbers within several broad categories. The classification practices outlined below are current conventions. They are provided as explanation, stating NLM's general classification approach using the National Library of Medicine's and the Library of Congress's schedules, rather than 'how to classify' instructions. Basic Rules The classification number assigned to a work is determined by the main focus or subject content of the work. A work dealing with several subjects that fall into different areas of the classification is classed by emphasis, or if emphasis is lacking, by the first subject treated in the work. A work on a particular disease is classified with the disease, which in turn is classified with the organ or region chiefly affected, regardless of special emphasis on form of therapy or diagnostic procedure used. Governor Turnbull and Acting Tourism Commissioner Receive Rave Reviews for Appearance at CHA Marketplace
U.S. Virgin Islands - December 20, 1998 Last weekend's Caribbean Hotel Association (CHA) Marketplace ¡99 provided the Turnbull Administration with an opportunity to meet the territory's key travel partners and members of the national travel media. An audience of about 100 members of the national travel media and tourism industry and dozens of representatives from the USVI's hotel community were in attendance at the territory's tourism press conference and VIP reception held in San Juan, Puerto Rico, January 16. Gov. Charles W. Turnbull and his Acting Commissioner of Tourism Clement "Cain" Magras were on hand to personally meet with the USVI's most influential travel partners and prospective travel partners worldwide. The highlight of the weekend's many activities was the VIP reception and destination press conference that the public and private sectors of the U.S. Virgin Islands' travel industry jointly hosted. The territory's two hotel associations worked together with the USVI Department of Tourism to help make the event an extraordinary success. Certainly the most well-received part of the evening was the speech made by Gov. Turnbull who was interrupted several times during his remarks with loud bursts of energetic applause.
