CARICOM Secretariat, Georgetown, Guyana In his welcoming remarks, Secretary-General of CARICOM, His Excellency Edwin Carrington, noted that while up to the mid 1980s CARICOM countries as a group were net food exporters, the Region is now a significant net food importer.
This situation, he warned, could become worse in a short while, as the main export crops of the member countries continue to lose markets and value as a result of liberalisation especially within the European Union (EU).
He added that against the background of these challenges and following the experience of a near food crisis in some Caribbean countries in the aftermath of September 11, the FAO and the CARICOM Secretariat collaborated on the development of a US$26 Million Food Security Project. The project was launched in December 2002 in association with the Inter-American Development Bank and by March 2003 received the prompt and positive response of the Government of Italy, which signed a US$5 Million component in October that year.

Gre·na·da grə-nā də
A country in the Windward Islands of the West Indies comprising the island of Grenada and the southern Grenadines. Originally inhabited by Arawaks, who were later driven out by Caribs, the island of Grenada was discovered by Columbus in 1498 and settled by the French in the mid-17th century. It became a British colony in 1783 and achieved independence in 1974. A coup in 1979 brought a Marxist government to power, and concern over Cuban influence led to an invasion by primarily U.S. troops in Ocotober 1983, after which democratic rule was restored. St. George's, on Grenada, is the capital and the largest city. Population: 89,300 . Gre·na di·an -dē-ən Encyclopedia Grenada grĭnā də ) , independent state within the Commonwealth of Nations (1995 est. pop. 94,000), 133 sq mi (344 sq km), in the Windward Islands, West Indies. Climate and Geography
Trinidad‘s climate can be described as pleasant tropical marine. Daytime temperatures average 31°C (87°F) moderated by north-east trade winds, while nights are a cool 21°C (69°F). Trinidad possesses two distinct seasons- dry, from January to May, and wet, from June to December. There is a short dry period around mid-September called Petit Carême, which is an excellent off-season time to visit. Trinidad is just outside the usual path of hurricanes and other tropical storms. The topography is primarily flat, with plains and hills in the central and south and a low mountain range in the north. The highest point, El Cerro del Aripo, situated in the northern range, is 940 m (3,080 feet). Forty-six (46) per cent of all land is undeveloped forest and woodlands. Trinidad is 4,828 sq. km (1,864 sq. miles) in area, which is roughly the size of Rhode Island in the USA. It is approximately rectangular in shape (81.25 km long by 57-73 km wide, or 50 miles by 35-45 miles). Tobago is approximately 300 sq. km in area, or 116 sq. miles.
