BACKGROUND FOR THE TEACHING OF CARIBBEAN PREHISTORY By Emily R. Lundberg, March 1997 Introductory Remarks The teaching of Caribbean prehistory is vital to development of appreciation for West Indian culture. Educators will create opportunities for pride in that culture by demonstrating its origins in the blending of multiple traditions. To accomplish such goals, educators continually must incorporate new material and present fresh perspectives. Our knowledge about the first peoples of the Caribbean is ever improving, based on new archaeological finds and new syntheses of older writings. It is important that the teacher seek out current information to supplement texts and class materials that may be somewhat dated. This background will provide a brief synopsis of current information, but it should not be taken as the last word on any of these subjects, especially as the years pass. In the Virgin Islands there are a number of professionals working in government offices, museums, libraries, and the V.I. Humanities Council who can guide inquirers to sources for additional or newer information. It also is important that the teacher reveal to students the gaps in knowledge, the differences of interpretations, and the open questions still under research. While helping students to build skills in evaluating the bases of others' conclusions, this more importantly will draw their attention to the ongoing research that connects their society to those of the past, and perhaps will attract their interest to the ways in which they and their generation might contribute.

An island country in the Caribbean Sea south of Cuba. Originally inhabited by Arawaks, it was discovered by Columbus in 1494 and settled by the Spanish in 1509. The British captured the island in 1655, and it was formally ceded to Great Britain in 1670, becoming a crown colony in 1865. Jamaica became independent in 1962. Jamaica is the largest island in the Caribbean after Cuba and Hispaniola. The capital and largest city is Kingston Land and People Although largely a limestone plateau more than 3,000 ft (914 m) above sea level, Jamaica has a mountainous backbone that extends across the island from the west and rises to the Blue Mts. in the east; Blue Mt. (7,402 ft/2,256 m) is the highest point. Rainfall is heavy in this region (where there are extensive timber reserves) but diminishes westward across the plateau, which is a rugged area deeply dissected by streams and underlain by subterranean rivers. The heart of the plateau, known as the Cockpits, is used mostly for livestock grazing. A narrow plain along the northern coast and several larger plains near the south shore are Jamaica's major agricultural zones. The north coast also has fine beaches and is the focus of the tourist industry. The Rio Grande and the Black River are the country's chief waterways, but neither is navigable for long distances. The coastal bands widened by broad river valleys, as well as the mountain slopes, support the bulk of Jamaica's export crops.

The Pre-European Population
Estimates of the size of the pre-Hispanic population of the Americas vary considerably. Both Columbus and Father Bartolomé de Las Casas (who wrote the first history of the Spanish conquest and treatment of the Indians) produced estimates that appear to defy credibility. Las Casas thought the population of the Caribbean might have been in the vicinity of several million, and by virtue of his having lived in both Hispaniola and Cuba where he held encomiendas , or the right to tribute from Indians, he is as close as we get to an eye-witness account. Las Casas had a penchant for hyperbole, and it is doubtful that he could have produced reliable estimates for areas where he did not travel. Nevertheless, some more recent scholars have tended to agree with Las Casas, estimating as many as 4 million inhabitants for the island of Hispaniola in 1492. Although the dispute continues, a consensus seems to be developing for far lower figures than previously accepted. An indigenous population of less than a million for all of the Caribbean would still be a relatively dense population, given the technology and resources of the region in the late fifteenth century. Probably one-half of these inhabitants would have been on the large island of Hispaniola, about 50,000 in Cuba, and far fewer than that in Jamaica. Puerto Rico, Dominica, St. Lucia, St. Vincent, and Trinidad all had fairly concentrated, if not large, populations.

The Turks and Caicos National Museum announces the postponement of the Slavery and Emancipation: Birth of the Caribbean Conference, originally scheduled for October 25-28th 2004.
Organisers apologise for any inconvenience caused but have decided to postpone the conference due the fact that many delegates from the Caribbean and US are encountering difficulties in attending due to this highly active tropical season across the region and in the USA.
Director of the National Museum and President of the Museums Association Of The Caribbean Nigel Sadler explains “the aim of this conference was to bring delegates from the Caribbean and the World together to discuss this important heritage. The level of interest in the subject of Slavery and the conference itself has been very encouraging. We hope that by postponing now, we will be able to ensure that all of those interested in attending the conference from across the Caribbean and in US States affected by the recent storms get the chance to participate.”
The Museum very much regrets this postponement and is at present working on plans to put on the conference in January 2005. Exact dates and details will be announced in the next few weeks.

June 2000, Volume 21 No. 2 General News Island-Hopping Mealybugs There are now two mealybug pests threatening the Caribbean and surrounding regions [see BNI 19(3), 72N (September 1998)]: Maconellicoccus hirsutus (the hibiscus or pink hibiscus mealybug - HMB or PHMB) and the more-recently arrived Paracoccus marginatus (papaya mealybug). Here we give an update on biocontrol programmes against these two pests. Rapid Response to Mealybug Invader The ability to identify pest mealybugs and readiness to react are key elements of a proactive biological control programme for containing the spread of Maconellicoccus hirsutus. The efficacy of this approach was shown when M. hirsutus reached the Central and North American mainlands in 1999 for the first time. Biological control agents were deployed within weeks of confirmation of the pest's presence in the USA and Belize. Maconellicoccus hirsutus is native to Southeast Asia. It was first reported in the Caribbean from Grenada in 1994 and has since spread to most islands of the Caribbean [

Adventure in the Caribbean Effects of the discovery of Haiti- Martinique and Guadeloupe
by
Iole A. Apicella
Contents of Curriculum Unit 92.02.04:
To Guide Entry
During Columbus’ second voyage, in 1493, nine islands were discovered in the Caribbean Sea. Several accounts were given about such conquests. Some writings are by Columbus himself but others are by important writers and philanthropists of the time who included stories of heroism and abuses endured by the natives to attempt to awaken the inner feelings of the reader. The lack of specific information about these islands, known all over the world for their beauty aroused my curiosity. Who were the original natives? Were they sociable or did they mistrust the newcomers? How did the newcomers treat the natives? This unit will be therefore devoted to the islands of Haiti, Martinique and Guadeloupe with the purpose of widening the knowledge of the past, the fights for freedom on these islands after the conquest and the political and economic role that they played after their discovery. OBJECTIVES
1. To learn about the discovery of these islands.

A MESSAGE FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT - updated August 2004 Dear Friends: The National Park Service is initiating a major planning effort that will guide the future management of both Virgin Islands National Park and the newly established Virgin Islands Coral Reef National Monument. This effort will create a vision for each park that will serve as a management blueprint for the next 15 to 20 years, namely new General Management Plans . To help guide us in this effort, we look forward to receiving input from the public, park partners, and others who have a vested stake in the future of these two parks. What should we be doing to ensure that cultural and natural resources are protected? What should we be doing to ensure that visitors have a quality experience? How can we work with our neighbors to address common problems that affect the parks and surrounding communities? Tell us your ideas about these and other topics. About the Parks Virgin Islands National Park Virgin Islands Coral Reef National Monument National Park Service managers constantly make difficult decisions about ways to preserve significant natural and cultural resources for public enjoyment, about competing demands for limited resources, about priorities for using available funds and staff, and about differing interests and views of what is most important. The General Management Plan process provides methods and tools for resolving these issues in ways that minimize conflicts and promote mutually beneficial solutions that articulate how public use and enjoyment of the park can be part of a strategy for ensuring that resources are protected unimpaired for future generations.

Retention and Preservation of African Roots in Jamaican Folk Music
Carter R. Stowell

August 4, 2000 Preface Amid tens of thousands of volumes in this library collection at UVM, the "silence" is in fact a low hum issuing from the vents. I read essay upon essay, ideas and histories of ideas, until I pause in a pensive moment. A thick green binding breaks my meditation. A title, The Power of Sound , fills my mind with music. I consider the power of words. In particular, the goal herein is to address issues regarding the persistence of African elements in Jamaican music. This purpose will be accomplished by first addressing the construct referenced by the phrase "African music elements". Then several themes — slavery, resistance and rebellion, religion, preservation — will be discussed as they pertain to a distinctly African heritage resplendent in early Jamaican music. Approaches to "African" music in Jamaica
