The Craft Craft Index The Heart of the Story Introduction Ever wonder how those amazing all-true stories you read in the weekend papers get discovered and written? How a journalist repeatedly makes a connection with their subjects and transforms an event or interview into compelling reading? Jon Ronson , feature writer for The Guardian , documentary film-maker, and author of Them: Adventures with Extremists , explores how to use the techniques of a journalist to pinpoint the story you want to tell and how to tell it. In this session we will examine: In this session we will cover:
  • Finding a Story to Tell Researching Your Story- When to Arrive You and Your Story A Note on the Business
  • My hope is that you're reading this because you're wondering whether to become a self-employed feature writer. Perhaps you're not - perhaps you're a fiction writer who is generous enough to realise that journalism is not, in fact, slumming it. Perhaps you're an underfunded poet who just wants some paid work. Hopefully, if you're any of these people you might find this useful. One of the great writing adages is 'write what you know'. Unless you live an extremely interesting life, and so many people do, you might eventually run out of material after that first autobiographical novel. It might help to examine the way a journalist chooses and hunts a story, finds an angle, interviews chosen characters and even the way to sell it to the right publication.

    WRITING TO REACH YOU
Early symptoms. An alphabeticised record collection. An ability to name not just the title and artist, but also the remixer and label of every tune on every advert. A mistaken belief that your date wants to hear about the minutae of Derrick May's career. Yup, you're a trainspotter, and since you've forfeited a normal social life you might as well try and make some cash out of all that trivia in your head. Which means either becoming a pub quiz champion or a music journalist. Pub quizzes might possibly be more profitable and are equally as bad on your liver, but as Paul Clarke found, most lack a 'nu-jazz and broken beats- round and don't get you loads of free records or entry to a life of jet-setting glamour. Or drinking the leftovers of bands' riders, at any rate.
    We don't need no education
Having diagnosed myself at an early age I always had scribbling as a career goal and thus did what was euphemistically called a 'Journalism' degree. If it had been an honest description it would have taught me about tax returns and the best way to bully money out of accounts departments. As it was I learnt an awful lot about the post-structural symbolism of 'South Park' (no joke) and one important lesson - qualifications mean nothing if you can't actually write. Several editors have told me that they are wary of hiring people with Journalism MAs because after years of having set journalistic styles drilled into you few people get to develop the individual voice editors are looking for.

In three months' time, I've doubled my clips, mastered on-the-street interviews and fallen in love with journalism all over again. That's not to say an internship at the Daily News is easy or that it will always be rewarding. This book is a unique, anecdote-rich, and articulate program that teaches us to think for ourselves rather than supplying us with easy, definitive answers. Offering concrete guidelines and principles, Kidder enables us to resolve ethical dilemmas and to make the tough choice between what are usually two "right" values. "A thought-provoking guide to enlightened and progressive personal behavior." Jimmy Carter "Rushworth Kidder is the best sort of public philosopher, one who can bring home the force of an abstract principle by means of a telling real-life example. The result is a valuable guide to more informed and self-conscious moral judgments." Bill Bradley "A brilliant analysis that squarely faces all the issues and can be grasped by the thoughtful nonspecialist."
