Writing a book, whether fiction or non-fiction, seems like a daunting task - and it is. That's why many people try out other shorter forms of writing before tackling 'the big one'. Often they enter fields like journalism and publishing to hone their skills. Patricia O'Reilly kick-started her career in such a fashion. She explains, "I started writing short stories and had great success to begin with. But the market for short story writing in Ireland is small, and it's difficult to have sustained success." Rather than committing herself to being a novelist, O'Reilly first turned her attention to feature writing for newspapers. Since starting her journalism career, she has been published in the country's most widely read newspapers and magazines. She has also produced a number of radio documentaries and written four works of non-fiction, including Writing for the Market (published by Mercier Press). It comes as no surprise to learn that O'Reilly, who is regularly invited to give workshops on this subject, has definite ideas on how to approach a newspaper or publisher for work.

Communication and Journalism/Mass Media
Introduction
In the communications field, ideas are transmitted through mass media. Communications professionals seek to inform, educate, persuade, or entertain masses of people, using books, newspapers, magazines, radio, TV, film, advertising and public relations. Communication and Journalism/Mass Media graduates find opportunities in a wide variety of careers in business, education, government and the non-profit sectors. Skills in verbal and written communication are one of the most sought after characteristics employers look for when hiring. Radio and TV, advertising and public relations, publishing, sales, financial services, and university student services are but a few of the many areas in which these graduates find employment. Any work that involves communicating as its focal point is a potential career field. The communications industry is a competitive one, however, and experience is a must. While most graduates work in a related occupation, others choose different directions. Experience has allowed many to progress without further education. However, an advanced degree can offer an edge, particularly with larger corporations. Many careers do not require a specific major but rather a wide range of demonstrated skills and accomplishments. Regardless of your career choices, increase your marketability to employers through internships, responsible work experience, good grades and involvement in college activities.

Wimps of the Roundtable and Other Challenges for Journalism Schools
by Wayne Robins
Last summer there was a sorrowful letter posted by a Chicago-area newspaper writer on journalism's online Village Green, Jim Romenesko's Media News . The reporter lamented being on the receiving end of Harrison Ford's sneer, a sneer of no small contempt.
Reason: The reporter had begun a disastrous roundtable interview with Ford, who was promoting his Russian submarine movie "K-19," by asking a question about a previous Ford movie, the title of which the reporter couldn't recall. It was downhill from there.
The reporter sulked in print about the star's boorishness, without acknowledging his own lack of preparation. He was fortunate Ford did not revert to an earlier role and deliver the hack 19 lashes with Indiana Jones' bullwhip.
Didn't anybody teach these people how to conduct a celebrity interview? Didn't anyone teach them the rule that you always open with a question about the new project, and keep asking them? Then I realized: Of course not.
I suspect that this problem, of journalists unequipped to lob even a softball to Harrison Ford, much less throw him the curve at which he would swing, did not give a restless moment to Columbia University President Lee C. Bollinger as he suspended the search for a new Dean of the Graduate School of Journalism in order to reevaluate the mission of the program.

Developing Employability Skills
Although we have been talking about skills as a part of the collection of qualities that combine to make you an individual, this does not mean that these skills are as fixed as your height, or as difficult to change as the shape of your nose. Personal skills can be acquired, developed and improved. You should now have a short-list of skills that you wish to improve: you may also have noted down some ways in which you might do this. These could include the following:-
Through your course
Course projects, dissertations and extended essays can be particularly valuable here. As well as the skills of independent research, and planning and organising your own work which they bring, sometimes you can choose the topic so that it is relevant to the type of work you wish to enter, giving a strong plus point for your CV. Analysing skills are required by the security services - now big recruiters of graduates.

Print and Desktop Publishing
Overview
There are several positions that one could go into in the publishing industry.
There are editors, who serve as the link between authors and the reading public. Editors control the quality of printed material and work closely with authors to point out mistakes and help authors to correct them. There are also graphic designers, who help design the layout of a publication. Work Environment People who work in publishing usually work in offices. There is not a lot of traveling associated with working in this field. The job can be stressful at times, as many publishing companies have many projects going on at one time. Many people must put in long hours to advance in this field.

Mass Communications
Overview
Jobs in mass communication include reporting for a newspaper, television station, or radio station. Reporters gather information and prepare stories to inform people about local, state, national, and international events and issues. Work Environment
Jobs in this field are often very stressful, due to irregular hours, pressure to meet deadlines, frequent night and weekend work and sometimes unusual or, at times, dangerous assignments. Outlook and Trends The job market in this area is very competitive and has recently been on the decline. The best job markets are found with small town or suburban newspapers or stations, which are good places to start to gain experience. Earnings According to a survey conducted in 1996 by the National Association of Broadcasters, the average salary of radio reporters ranged from $20,217 at

Save a personal copy of this article and quickly find it again with Furl.net. It's free! Save it. SOMEBODY'S GOTTA TELL IT BY JACK NEWFIELD ST MARTIN'S PRESS. 336 PP. $25.95 Raymond Chandler despised memoirs. "Who the hell cares that a twelve-year-old kid didn't get a bike for Christmas?" the hardboiled writer said. George Bernard Shaw, too, looked on the form with contempt: as Jack Newfield reminds us in the opening sentence of his memoir, Somebody's Gotta Tell It, Shaw declared that those who write them "are like beggars who display their scabs for money." I am a sucker for Chandler but I am also a fan of the memoir, particularly those that deliver the Christmas coal as well as the scabs on wings of marvelous prose. Jack Newfield, muckraker and voice for the friendless, has been picking at other people's scabs for most of his forty-odd years as a reporter and columnist. His remembrance of things past is written in a style far more prosaic, say, than that of a Frank McCourt or a Gore Vidal, and far less sparkling than his mentor Murray Kempton displayed in even casual conversation. Still, the good stuff, the bold-faced names - Mario Cuomo, Robert Kennedy, Muhammad Ali, Norman Mailer - are there.

Invoking awe and inspiration in a roomful of budding journalists, Sacramento Bee columnist Diana Griego Erwin spoke of winning a Pulitzer Prize as a first-year journalist, the importance of investigative journalism, and the need for reporters to immerse themselves in the communities they cover. Erwin's April 5 presentation was part of a week-long Celebration of Excellence by CSU, Chico's Department of Journalism in honor of the twenty-fifth anniversary of The Orion, the university's student-run newspaper. Erwin's reporting career began as a high school student in Los Angeles. Never aspiring to become a journalist, Erwin joined the school's newspaper staff at the urging of her English teacher. When she began undergraduate work at CSU, Fullerton, she made a beeline for the Daily Titan newsroom.

Providing Evidence of Specific Skills
Every occupation can be defined in terms of a range of skills and abilities. Some of these will be intellectual skills, such as a good memory, specialist knowledge, numeracy or the ability to write clearly and precisely. Other skills will be more concerned with how you interact with other people, such as face-to-face communication, supervision, persuasion, or working in a team. Selectors need to be convinced that you have the relevant abilities and skills required for a particular occupation. Initially they will look on your application form for
