The Visual Arts Program,
College of the North Atlantic
The Visual Arts Program is a diploma level program of the College of the North Atlantic. Located in its Stephenville campus on the west coast of the island, the program offers a strong foundation for students with a career interest in clay, metal or visual arts. Teacups and Saucers: A Class Assignment The Visual Arts Program provides basic and intermediate studio experiences for the student. The four-semester program has been carefully designed to be both comprehensive and general in nature. Previous experience or a portfolio is not required; however, by the time the students complete the program, they will have developed skills in drawing, design, photography, art history, and a selection of visual arts and crafts areas. The program is designed to provide a foundation for people who have a general interest in art as well as for those who are interested in career- oriented training. Particular interest is placed on developing students’ personal and creative potential, while they are learning new technical skills.
The first year of the program provides the student with a foundation in all areas listed above and during the Materials and Techniques course the student also experiences approximately five to six weeks in each of the following areas: Ceramics, Jewellery, Painting, Printmaking, and Sculpture. This allows each student to choose two areas to more fully develop as a studio option in the second year. Students continue in Art History, Design, Drawing and the two courses selected for concentration. Photography becomes an additional studio option in the second year.

The UNT School of Visual Arts has the nation's largest art program at a public institution, and it is considered one of the best in the Southwest. The programs in the school are grouped into three areas - art history/art education, design and studio. Among the programs in the studio division are ceramics, fibers, metalsmithing and jewelry, and print-making. Artists working in these fields are often self-employed, exhibiting and selling their work in galleries and stores. Some work commercially in the fashion or textile industry, or for industrial ceramic companies, jewelry manufacturing companies or printing businesses. Increasingly, businesses are seeking employees who are educated in the visual arts for positions in their education, training or design departments. You do not need an advanced degree to become an artist, but teaching art at the college level does require a master of fine arts. UNT's Career Opportunities Center can help you prepare to pursue your career. The center has information about jobs and employers. It assists with resume and letter writing, job search strategies and interview preparation. Majoring in Metals and Jewelry:
As a major in ceramics, fibers, metalsmithing and jewelry, or printmaking, you will take courses in art appreciation, art history, crafts, design and drawing, in addition to specific course work for your major. You will have access to large, well-equipped studios and instruction in a wide range of techniques.

art - For numerous reasons, the most difficult word to define without starting endless argument! Many definitions have been proposed. At least art involves a degree of human involvement — through manual skills or thought — as with the word " artificial ," meaning made by humans instead of by nature. Definitions vary in how they divide all that is artificial into what is and isn't art. The most common means is to rely upon the estimations of art experts and institutions. More useful may be to see definitions of aesthetics the arts beaux-arts craft ... high art , and low art Quotations about art, including others' definitions of art art advocacy - See advocacy - This is an international association whose members are over 210 art and creative (read: craft material manufacturers . Founded in 1940, ACMI is an authority on art and craft materials. Its principal goal is to assist its members in providing the public with art and craft materials for children and artists that are non- toxic or properly labeled with safe use information whenever the use of a product could present an adverse health effect. ACMI said in 2004 that, "Of the 60,000 art and craft material formulations evaluated to date, 100% of the children's products and 85% of those meant for the adult artist are certified as non-toxic. All products in the program undergo extensive toxicological evaluation and testing before they are granted the right to bear the ACMI certification seals."
