Industry Overview Perhaps epitomizing the default definition of "artist," fine/visual artists create physical artwork to communicate their ideas. Some create art on their own, perhaps in a studio, while others create art commissioned by someone else. Often a studio artist's goal is to support oneself solely through one's art, but this necessitates a certain level of renown and a good deal of business acumen. Many artists take on freelance work, are hired to work in someone else's studio, or are employees of companies that produce visual materials (such as publishers and advertising agencies). Others continue to create their art while working in other related or unrelated industries for a steady salary.
Basic Definitions There are a variety of definitions (and corresponding debates) of fine art and visual art (and commercial art, graphic art, craft, etc.).
Possible Occupational Titles: painter, illustrator, sculptor, potter, printmaker, stained-glass artist, photographer, cartoonist
Related Occupational Titles: art director, production artist, camera operator, painting restore.

2001 Special Projects Grant Honoring the Contributions of Mature Visual Artists Total contributed for the Visual Arts program in 2001/2002: $995,044 To further an appreciation for the independent, creative voice in society is one of Flintridge Foundation's most deeply held tenets. In 1997 the Foundation launched the Awards for Visual Artists program to acknowledge and support the creative contributions of visual artists to our cultural life. In 2001 grants of $25,000 each were awarded to twelve West Coast artists who sustained a high level of artistic pursuit for twenty or more years. The Awards encompassed artists working in the full range of fine arts and crafts media. Flintridge values the commitment required to pursue a life in art and intends to encourage artists who do not have current national renown. 2001 marked the first time that the Awards were distributed equally between California and the Pacific Northwest. The six artists from California and six from Oregon/Washington were chosen by separate, regional panels of arts professionals. The panelists were selected not only for their expertise but for qualities that were deemed essential to the panel's ability to work together: generosity, sincerity, willingness to listen and, most of all, courage to explore the meaning of excellence across a wide spectrum of artistic disciplines, mediums, and styles. The California panelists were: Ellen Fleurov, former Museum Director, California Center for the Arts, Escondido; Philip Linhares, Chief Curator, The Oakland Museum of California; and Larry Thomas, painter/printmaker, Vice President and Dean of Academic Affairs, San Francisco Art Institute. The Oregon/Washington panelists were: LaMar Harrington, Director/Chief Curator (emeritus), Bellevue Art Museum; Terri M. Hopkins, Director/Curator, The Art Gym, Marylhurst University, Portland; Beth Sellars, Curator, Seattle Arts Commission and Suyama Space, Seattle.
