41. KiwiCareers - Visual Arts, Design And Crafts For The Wellington Region
An overview of the visual arts, Design and crafts industry in the Wellington Region region.
http://www.kiwicareers.govt.nz/industry/i11_cul/r11f_9.htm
Visual Arts, Design and Crafts in the Wellington Region Regional labour market information for:

Arts:
The visual arts, design and crafts industry is small to medium-sized in the Wellington region, due to the part it plays in the advertising industry. This industry is expected to remain stable over the next three to five years, although a slight decline is expected in the Wairarapa area due to an increase in the number of people creating their own work, such as newsletters and business cards, on home computers. This loss of work from the bottom end of the market may be balanced by an increased demand for high quality advertising products from the top end of the market. Employment opportunities are also expected to remain stable, although some increase may occur within central Wellington due to economic growth. Changing technology is a major influence on this industry. As new technology is introduced both commercially and in the home, visual arts, design and crafts are being frequently designed due to the availability and price of materials. Within photography the change from analogue to digital equipment is ongoing and continues to have a huge impact on the industry, especially now digital products are of a similar quality to photographic film. With the change to digital big expenses will be incurred by the industry; however, it is expected that film photography will become obsolete. The state of the regional economy is another major influence on this industry and any growth in the economy will affect the visual arts, design and crafts due to the flow-on effects of general business growth. The advertising industry, and the visual arts, design and crafts industry's role in this, is allied to the selling of New Zealand products and any downturn or upturn in these areas will affect the industry.

Priority Human Resources Development Needs in the Canadian Cultural Sector
Report from CHRC's sub-sectoral committee on Visual Arts and Crafts
Introduction
According to 1991 Census data cited in the sub-sectoral study Work in Progress: Human Resource Issues in the Visual Arts and Crafts , Canada's visual arts and crafts sub-sector then encompassed approximately 26,000 visual artists and craftspeople (10,800 and 15,500 respectively), working in drawing, painting, carving, sculpture, metalsmithing, printmaking, tapestry, video and performance art, and "design". These artists created their works in many different media: paint, ceramics, fibre, stone, metal, glass, wood, paper and leather. Estimates of the value of the visual arts and crafts to the Canadian economy vary widely. Work in Progress estimated visual art sales alone at about $250 million annually. Craft sales, it said, were much more difficult to accurately estimate; however the study pointed to a 1983 Québec study that estimated the annual craft market in that province were $250 million. Between 1986 and 1991, the sub-sector grew by approximately 20% (compared with average growth in all Canadian occupations of 6% for that period). This rapid growth probably results from the combination of artists' typical career patterns (many years are usually needed to develop a practice that supports "making a living"), and the overall aging of the Canadian baby boom generation. Since the mid-1980s, as well, more women have entered the sub-sector. In all, the sub-sector has a significantly older workforce than other parts of the cultural sector, or the Canadian workforce as a whole.
