These artists created their works in many different media: paint, ceramics, fibre, stone, metal, glass, wood, paper and leather. Estimates of the value of the visual arts and crafts to the Canadian economy vary widely. Work in Progress estimated visual art sales alone at about $250 million annually. Craft sales, it said, were much more difficult to accurately estimate; however the study pointed to a 1983 Québec study that estimated the annual craft market in that province were $250 million. Between 1986 and 1991, the sub-sector grew by approximately 20% (compared with average growth in all Canadian occupations of 6% for that period). This rapid growth probably results from the combination of artists' typical career patterns (many years are usually needed to develop a practice that supports "making a living"), and the overall aging of the Canadian baby boom generation. Since the mid-1980s, as well, more women have entered the sub-sector. In all, the sub-sector has a significantly older workforce than other parts of the cultural sector, or the Canadian workforce as a whole.
