Nature of the Work About this section Back to Top Kennel attendants care for pets while their owners are working or traveling out of town. Beginning attendants perform basic tasks, such as cleaning cages and dog runs, filling food and water dishes, and exercising animals. Experienced attendants may provide basic animal healthcare, as well as bathe animals, trim nails, and attend to other grooming needs. Attendants who work in kennels also may sell pet food and supplies, assist in obedience training, help with breeding, or prepare animals for shipping. groomers . Some groomers work in kennels, veterinary clinics, animal shelters, or pet-supply stores. Others operate their own grooming business, typically at a salon, or sometimes by making house calls. E-Mail This Article More women finding careers in zoos By Rachel Ellner, Globe Correspondent, 3/6/05 Globe Staff Photo/Pat Greenhouse Stone Zoo lead zookeeper Sandy Elliot gets a 'greeting' from 'Xena,' one of six llamas at the facility. Elliott explains that because of llamas' poor up-close eyesight, one should not stare straight into their eyes but bow their head to be smelled. When Linda Rohr Bachers was growing up in Wisconsin she thought the only way she could be around animals was to marry a farmer. She didn't know that careers working with elephants, rare birds, and big cats existed for women. Today she keeps track of the daily lives of 1,000 animals at Zoo New England. Sandy Elliott loved animals but assumed zoo work was men's work. She applied for a zookeeper job at Zoo New England on a $20 bet with a male friend who thought she was a perfect match for the job description. "I've never lost awe of being around these animals," says Elliott. She has worked at Stone Zoo for the past 21 years and is lead zookeeper. By the time Hayley Murphy attended veterinarian school there was an increase in women training to become veterinarians. Yet to specialize in zoo medicine there were only four or five residencies a year nationwide. The risks were rewarded. "From hoof stock to birds to primates to carnivores, the variation I deal with is tremendous," says the director of veterinary medicine at Zoo New England.

Brisbane Zoo!!!

What, did I hear you right? 56 pets?! Wow
by Elleni A. Hi, my name is Elleni and I'm a junior vet on my way to becoming a professional. I am known as the Brisbane Zoo keeper and my house is known as the ZOO!!!! I have lots of animals in my house! The reason?
Because I love animals!. This is what I have at my so called zoo of mine: mice, turtles, birds, crabs, snails, fish, cats, dogs, And Fighter Fish (which are a special type of fish, that you have to keep each one in a separate tank, otherwise they will kill each other by fighting each other all day. That is why they are called "Fighter Fish"!) Animals are special they come in all shapes and sizes and are entitled to have freedom, justice, harmony, love and care. Anyone who has any pets will know that animals are very special. They are more than an animal that you feed and clean there environment, they are your friend, your best friend, a part of the family a creature that will always be by your side, a creature always willing to help and be your friend. Animals are special!

Why should I choose Jefferson Community College? Jefferson Community College’s Animal Management program is unique. There are only a handful of schools that offer such animal and zoo related training. JCC’s program is designed to prepare students for careers in zoos as both zoo keepers and animal interpreters/educators. The cost of college is a major concern to most students. JCC is proud to be the most affordable choice in the North Country and has one of te lowest tuitions among the SUNY colleges. Financial support is also available and we encourage you to apply Located just 30 minutes south of the Canadian Border, JCC is within hours of other AZA accredited zoos in Toronto, Montreal, Syracuse, Rochester, Buffalo and Binghamton. During the course of the program, students will experience many of these zoos. Jefferson Community College is also located only minutes away from the Army's Fort Drum. This military base is home of the

Preparing for a Career in Aquatic Animal Medicine
Ruth Francis-Floyd, DVM, MS, Dipl. ACZM At the University of Florida we receive many inquiries from high school and college students interested in pursuing a career in aquatic animal medicine. We commonly get requests for suggestions for course work and other preparations and questions about career options. Before we can make suggestions, it is important that the student articulate his or her career goals as clearly as possible. There are quite a few career paths available, and many more are likely to be created in the coming years. Key considerations for students include an honest personal assessment of interests, talents, and academic ability. If the goal is to be an aquatic animal veterinarian, then obviously the first step is to put together a competitive packet for admission to a college of veterinary medicine. There are also many career opportunities that do not require a veterinary degree. Some suggestions for these career options and how to prepare for them are offered below.
Careers that May not Require Formal Education Beyond the Bachelor's Degree
Careers with aquatic animals that do not require academic training beyond a bachelor's degree include laboratory technician, aquaculture technician, veterinary technician, aquarist or zoo keeper. Many of these careers are hands-on jobs that are directly involved with daily animal care or handling. A general education in biology or a related field is often good academic preparation. Some of these positions may only require a two-year degree. For example, Santa Fe Community College (Gainesville, FL) offers a two-year degree for zoo keepers and Hillsborough Community College (Tampa, FL) offers a two-year degree for aquaculture technicians. There are also two-year programs that provide certification for

So You Want to be a Zookeeper?
The Saint Louis Zoo receives many inquiries from kids and adults interested in learning what it takes to be a zookeeper. We also receive questions regarding careers in related fields, like wildlife management, forestry, conservation, and ecology. We're gratified that so many people like animals and want to work with them. And we're happy to help people understand how to prepare for a career in zoos, aquaria, and other wildlife organizations. Here are some suggestions, as well as a few other websites that provide even more detailed information on what zoo careers entail, and how to prepare for them:
If You're in Elementary School
Knowing about animals, conservation and the natural world is a big part of a zoo career, and it's never too early to start learning!

What is a Zoologist?
I receive many emails asking what a Zoologist does and how does one become a Zoologist. These emails have prompted the creation of this page. I thought having this information here will 1) cut down on my email and 2) make it easier for students to find the information they need. You will find links to many sites on this page. If you can't find here what you are looking for, check the links. If you still can't get the answers you need, please send me email at andy@zoo.utoronto.ca Anyway, let's get down to business... From Webster's definition above, a Zoologist is a Biologist who specializes in the study of animals. That seems straightforward, yet seemingly it leaves many wondering what that exactly means. Part of the problem is that the field encompasses the entire animal kingdom, from viruses to whales, and includes a vast array of disciplines. Some people envision a Zoologist as someone working in the wilds studying animal behaviour. That fits in well with their idea of what a Zoologist does, i.e.

Giraffes are just one of the many species she has had daily contact with as a zookeeper. "You get to know the animals' habits, their likes and dislikes," she says. "They recognize you and depend on you, and that's a great feeling." Keepers and other animal caretakers at zoos and aquariums work closely with exotic animals, including pandas, elephants, and poison dart frogs. They study the animals in their care to learn what makes them thrive. "The more we learn about what animals need in captivity, the more we can help them in the wild," says Curator John Ffinch. "That makes our jobs exciting. And it gets us closer to our ultimate goal of helping these animals survive in the wild."

ZOOLOGY The field of zoology, simply stated, is the study of animal life. The general curriculum includes a solid foundation in zoology courses supplemented with course work in other areas such as chemistry, physics, and mathematics. Students who desire breadth in the liberal arts can work toward a Bachelor of Arts degree and students who desire an in-depth study in the sciences can work toward a Bachelor of Science degree.
INTERESTS Curiosity about animals. Zoologists may have a special interest in studying a particular group of animals such as mammals (mammalogists), amphibians and reptiles (herpetologists), insects (entomologists), molluscs (malacologists), etc. Some may have a more general interest in studying life processes such as the functions and vital processes of organisms (physiologists), the development of a whole organism following the fusion of gametes (developmentalists), the structure and function of cells (cell biologists), the mechanisms of inheritance (geneticists), or the interactions of the many kinds of molecules (DNA, proteins, etc.) produced and used by organisms (molecular biologists). Other zoologists may focus their attention on the interactions of organisms with one another and with their environment (ecologists) or may have an interest in animal behavior (ethologists).
