THE CAREERS FAIR
The 2006 Careers Fair will be held on Thursday 2nd February, 2 pm to 5 pm in Rutherford Great Hall.
Kent graduates in all kinds of career areas return to the campus to talk informally about their work and how they got into it. It is NOT a recruitment fair so drop in just as you are and take this chance to ask any questions you like. Everybody is welcome, particularly first and second year students - it's never too early to start planning your future career.
What do Kent graduates do?
A small part of the answer can be discovered at the Alumni Careers Fair each year when almost 60 of them return to the University to talk about the way that their careers have developed since they left student life for the big wide world.
What happens at the Careers Fair?
It is a very informal occasion - the graduates will be available for any interested student to chat to and to ask any questions that you might have about their career: how they got there, what the work is like and how you can follow in their footsteps. It is not a recruitment fair - these graduates will not be seeking to head-hunt for their current employer, or to "sell" a particular career to you - just to give students an impartial, insider's view of their chosen career.

SELF-EMPLOYMENT
Starting and running your own business
GRADUATES AND SELF-EMPLOYMENT
Some statistics:
  • While only around 3% of graduates report that they are self-employed immediately after graduation , this percentage represents almost 7000 graduates each year This percentage is higher in subjects such as art and design, drama and multimedia/computing Three years after graduation , the percentage has increased to 6 or 7% A Gallup poll commissioned by the EU at the end of 2002 indicated that 67% of UK students would strongly prefer to be self-employed
SOME ROUTES INTO SELF-EMPLOYMENT
  • Often the best way to start your own business is to try to set it up in your spare time while still working in another job (ideally part-time). This will allow you to test the water and establish networks of suppliers and customers while still having money coming in to support yourself. If you can work from home initially, this will avoid the costs of leasing premises until you have something established. Sometimes a group of graduates will get together to form a partnership upon leaving university. This allows you to draw upon the skills of the individual members.

Most of them are employed in agribusiness a large sector of U.S. agriculture that handles grain from the time it leaves the farm to the time it becomes finished food products in the grocery store.
