Working for a Small Employer
WHAT IS AN SME? The European Commission (EC) defines an SME, or 'Small or Medium-sized Enterprise', as an organisation that employs fewer than 250 staff and has a turnover of less than 50 million Euros (approximately £33 million) and/or an annual balance sheet total not exceeding 43 million Euros (approximately £29 million). SMEs currently make up 98% of all EU enterprises and employ more than 74 million people throughout Europe. The EC sees SMEs as a 'a source of employment, innovation, entrepreneurship and growth' and with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) estimating that SMEs account for over half (55.6%) of all UK employment (2002 report) it is clear that they are a significant group of employers worthy of further investigation. WHAT CAN AN SME OFFER ME? Working for a small - medium sized company can offer a range of benefits potentially including:
  • A simpler, less time-consuming selection process.

The CFO may know more about finance and the vice president of marketing more about marketing, but the general manager has to know enough about each function to: coordinate its activities with the organization's overall strategy, and plan the business's strategy for going forward. In a way, a general manager is like a symphony orchestra conductor, who holds rehearsals, hires and retains the talent, conducts during performances, and composes music that the orchestra will play during future engagements. Clearly, a general manager's job is complex and requires flexibility and quick decision making. One general
manager described the work as "juggling hand grenades while pedaling down a bumpy road on a unicycle." Not surprisingly, most successful business people advise aspiring entrepreneurs to learn the craft of managing while working for someone else before striking out on their own. In fact, one venture capitalist
asserted that when someone with little or no management experience starts a new business, the question isn't whether the enterprise is going to fail it's when it will fail. The responsibilities of general management are so complex that a single mistake can doom a start-up. Ultimately, accountability for the success (or failure) of the business rests entirely with the general manager which is what many people find so challenging and attractive about the role. How to prepare yourself for this weighty responsibility? Prepare yourself thoroughly please read the special section for this business career profile, The Right Path, to learn about the ways you can become a general manager.

    http://www.sfsu.edu/~mktgwww/career.htm
    Careers in Marketing
    Description of Marketing Jobs
Almost a third of all Americans are employed in marketing-related positions. Thus, the number of possible marketing careers is enormous. Because of the knowledge of products and consumers gained in these jobs, marketing provides excellent training for the highest levels in the organization. A recent study by a recruiting firm found that more top executives have come out of marketing than of any other area. Marketing salaries vary by company and position. Beginning salaries usually rank only slightly below those for engineering and chemistry, but equal or exceed those for economics, finance, accounting, general business, and the liberal arts. If you succeed in an entry-level marketing position, you will quickly be promoted to higher levels of responsibility and salary. For recent information on jobs and salaries see the Career Center at SFSU. Marketing has become an attractive career for some people who have not traditionally considered this field. One trend is the growing number of women entering marketing. Women have historically been employed in the retailing and advertising areas of marketing. But they now have moved into all types of sales and marketing positions. Women now pursue successful sales careers in pharmaceutical companies, publishing companies, banks, consumer products companies, and in an increasing number of industrial selling jobs. Their ranks are also growing in product and brand manager positions.
