Connexions partnerships have helped cut the number of young people not in education, work or training by an average of 14% over two years, according to figures released in February 2005. National Association of Connexions Partnerships (NACP) statistics for November 2002-4 show that in most parts of England, the service has beaten the Government-set target to reduce the number of disengaged young people by 10% by 2004. But six out of the 47 partnerships fell short of this figure. According to the figures, 123,000 or 7.7% of 16 to 18-year-olds were not in work, education or training last November. The Government target was 8.1%.

High school guidance counselors Joan Klaus,
founder, College and Career Readiness Network The problem High school guidance counselors are in short supply, and those on the job struggle to serve an overwhelming number of students while keeping up with a host of administrative tasks. As a result, many CPS students do not get enough guidance to succeed in high school and move on to college or the workforce.
Since 1997, high schools have been required to offer an advisory class that pairs a teacher with a group of students for four years. The class is intended to help students bond with someone on school staff who could help them realize their goals, but research indicates it has yet to fulfill its mission on a large scale.
Staggering statistics
Filling the gap

More promising is the growing number of nonprofits offering tutoring, mentoring and college readiness services to students who need it. Ten years ago, a group of Cabrini-Green volunteers formed the Tutor/Mentor Connection, which today recruits volunteer tutors for over 500 youth programs.
Joan Klaus, a Bank One Corp. vice president, founded the College and Career Readiness Network for organizations that provide college readiness programs to low-income and minority students. About 140 area corporate and nonprofit groups have joined.

College Application Checklist
Choosing a college is not an exact science. You look at many things in selecting a collegelocation, cost, size, special courses, or athletic opportunites. Colleges also look at all your different characteristicsacademic, special interests, experence, and test scores. To keep your sanity during the process, a plan and a checklist are needed. Hopefully this will help parents organize their seniors. 1. Develop a list of colleges based on what's important to the student, typically ten to twelve schools. 2. Write or call for applications and information and then become familiar with each college's strengths and offerings. 3. Organize the process. Make a file for each college.
