101. Ann Arbor Huron High School Guidance And Counseling - Career Planning
Depending on the career, this could mean a grade school, high school, What high school courses can I still take to help me reach my career goal?
http://huron.aaps.k12.mi.us/counsel/career_plan.htm
Career Planning
Career Planning is about taking necessary steps you need to find the career that is right for you. Answer the following questions about
  • the kind of work done skills and abilities needed interests and aptitudes, and how to prepare for this kind of work
The first step in Career Planning starts with daydreaming about what you think you might be doing in five, ten, and even twenty years. Or maybe you already have some ideas about careers you would enjoy. Look at your likes, dislikes, and your strengths and weaknesses. Do you have any passions?
Another place to get ideas is talk to your friends and members of your family. You can start noticing the jobs people are doing as you go through your daily routine. While your read, do your school work and watch television, you can be thinking of possible careers.
As you explore and daydream about yourself in all kinds of jobs, list the careers that you want to learn more about.
If you have some ideas, make a list of these careers and occupations that interest you, then start your career search. Look at the skills and abilities needed to to the job. Is this the work for you? Some careers require the people entering them to hold certain values. For example an artist would have to rank creativity high, while a politician would probably need to feel that power is an important value.
Unless you have certain values, success in some careers is unlikely. Take a look at the working environment whether it is done indoors or outdoors. A lot of people don't like to be confined indoors during the working hours. They prefer to work in the sun and fresh air.

Career Guidance, Families and School Counselors. Highlights: An ERIC/CAPS Digest.
Recent national surveys indicate that career guidance is a major issue for American families. In Gallup polls, for example, parents report that helping their children choose a career is their second most pressing concern. For the general public, understanding the world of work and making realistic plans for after high school are the third and sixth most important goals of education. In short, career guidance has a top priority with parents, the general public and high school students. Continuing and further assistance appears to be needed, and a collaborative effort between schools and families could help meet the need. This digest briefly considers the following issues relevant to this effort: family determinants of children's career development, stages of children's career development, counselor guidelines for starting parent programs, and counselor interventions to utilize family influence. FAMILY DETERMINANTS OF CHILDREN'S CAREER DEVELOPMENT STAGES OF CHILDREN'S CAREER DEVELOPMENT COUNSELOR GUIDELINES FOR STARTING PARENT PROGRAMS School counselors can start involving parents in career guidance by creating a parent resource library, distributing lists of practical suggestions, and calling a parent group meeting to get the program off the ground. Laramore (1984) offers some practical guidelines for insuring the success of the involvement program:
