Richard Gordon This career guidance brochure for high school and undergraduate students is a minor update of: Gordon, R. (1993). Careers in theoretical biology. Carolina Tips 56(3), 9-11. Printed copies of the original, with colored illustrations, may be requested from: Carolina Biological Supply Company, 2700 York Road, Burlington, NC 27215-3398 USA, Phone: (910) 584-0381, Fax: (910) 584-3399, Internet: Shoffner@squid.pdial.interpath.net 27215-3398 USA, Phone: (910) 584-0381, Fax: (910) 584-3399, Internet: Shoffner@squid.pdial.interpath.net who have provided permission for transmission on Internet of this version.
What is Theoretical Biology?
Theoretical biology may be defined as the application of reason to biology. In this sense, every biologist is, at least part of the time, a theoretical biologist. However, the daily goal of a theoretician is to explain the biological world. The theoretical biologist's product is a theory, an idea, not an observation or an experimental result, though it is based on them. This is what sets the theoretical biologist apart from other biologists. The theoretical biologist delves deeply into all the data available, comes up with unexpected relationships, tries to quantify them using all the tools of reason (math, logic, computers, etc.), and makes specific predictions about the outcome of future experiments and observations. Sometimes a critical experiment would never have been done without the inspiration of your theory in the first place. There is nothing more satisfying than seeing your theory proven correct.

The Virginia Department of Education offers a website with information regarding "Frequently Asked Questions about Earning a Virginia High School Diploma". Career Guidance Activities/8th Grade
Eighth grade students at E. B. Stanley Middle School will visit the Washington County Technical School during the spring of the school year. The students will learn about various vocational careers by experiencing the hands-on exploratory labs. The areas they will visit includ: automotive, carpentry, cosmetology, computer, health occupations and masonry. This visit will be conducted prior to high school scheduling so that some of these students could decide to choose to attend WCTS next year for one-half day. They will take their math there as well. The college bound students benefit from the visit by being better prepared to refine their choices and examine how this fits with their objectives. All students will be given valuable materials for career decision-making that includ a large booklet entitled “Mid-Atlantic Guide to Information on Careers-Prepare Now”.

SEVENTH GRADE
A s new students transition to middle school, our efforts first focus on easing the transition and helping students gain skills in coping, stress management, and flexibility in adapting to the new educational environment. Other age-appropriate issues such as self-awareness, positive attitude toward self and others, personal coping skills, and the maintenance of on-going relationships with adults and peers are covered in the classroom or individual/small group environments. Time management, setting goals, organization, and study skills may also be included in individual and large group discussions as needed.
EIGHTH GRADE
In the eighth grade, the focus becomes preparing students for high school. Study skills, organization, and time management are areas of emphasis. Other areas of focus include developing a positive self-concept, learning to value individual differences, conflict resolution, decision-making skills, and relationship skills. Students participate in a unit on career exploration, which includes doing a career interest inventory.
NINTH GRADE
Freshman year is one of great transition for students. Returning students from H-M Middle School meet and mesh with new incoming ninth graders. This is high school! Freshmen are invited to the Guidance and Learning Center early in the fall for an orientation. We explain how guidance counselors can help them access academic support systems, define graduation requirements, emphasize the importance of grades and

So how do you help performing arts students sort out their careers? Urban legend has it that Careers Advisers tend to bottle out and start suggesting 'sensible jobs' when faced with questions like:
  • How do I approach an agent? What should be on my acting CV? How do I get a job in a recording studio How do I get work for a film company? Which is the best music/dance/drama course to study How do I get to be famous?
A lot of the above questions require direct answers, to what are really practical problems rather than just guidance issues, and they are no different to occupational knowledge about any other career. For example, once you know what an acting CV should look like then the 'guidance' often follows on e.g.
What type of experience have they already had?

Further information

Head teachers and governing bodies of all maintained schools (including special schools and pupil referral units) must ensure that their school provides programmes of careers education to all pupils in Years 9 to 11. They must work with the Connexions Service to ensure that pupils have access to comprehensive and up-to-date careers information materials and guidance and ensure that access is provided to the Connexions Service to enable them to provide services to schools and pupils to fulfil their contracted duties on behalf of the Secretary of State. Head teachers must work with Connexions to ensure that pupils have access to guidance materials and a wide range of up-to-date reference materials relating to careers education and careers opportunities. Where possible, this information should be provided in a dedicated Connexions resource centre/library with computer based resources; where this is not possible, a school should work with their local Connexions to provide the next best form of provision which satisfies pupils information needs. Access should be provided for all secondary pupils. The school and Connexions should jointly review the effectiveness of current careers information provision in meeting their pupils needs, including information on post-16 education and training options. Advice and support (including resources) for the Connexions resource centre/library should form part of an annual Partnership Agreement between the school and the Connexions service.
