Job Search Methods for the 21st Century. ERIC Digest No. 207.
During the past several years, the job hunt has changed. The World Wide Web has become an important source for job information and career development (Brown 1998; Wagner 1996, 1998, 1999). This Digest combines updates of LOCATING JOB INFORMATION. ERIC DIGEST NO. 85 (Wagner 1989) and JOB SEARCH METHODS. ERIC DIGEST NO. 121 (Wagner 1992).
THE JOB SEARCH
The first step in looking for a job is to decide what type of a job you are looking for. Determine what skills you have that are marketable and match them with available jobs. A variety of methods for determining what job is best for you are described by Athanasou and Hoskiug (1998), Carney and Wells (1994), and Martin (1998). Job leads can be found through employment agencies, career centers, the public library, the newspaper, on the Internet, and through networking. It may be necessary to use more than one method when looking for a job ("Tips on Finding and Getting a Job" 1998). Many public libraries, universities and colleges, and high schools have job/career/occupational centers that include a variety of books and materials related to the job search. Information about choosing the right career, finding information about available jobs, applying for jobs (application, resumes, and cover letters), and interviewing will be available at these centers. Although titles may vary, these agencies will all have materials similar to those listed here. In addition, they may have people who can assist you either in workshops or on a one-to-one basis.

Obtaining Government Employment Although the government at all levels is downsizing extensively, there are still employment opportunities for students committed to public service. It is important, however, for students interested in government employment to learn how jobs are filled, and how to efficiently locate and access opportunities utilizing newly created government procedures. In some cases the application process may take up to one year. Start now! Students with a GPA under 3.5 may apply for civil service positions or on the Internet ( www.usajobs.opm.gov To apply for positions with independent agencies under the exempted service classification, students of all grade point averages may apply directly with the hiring agency. Independent agency positions are exempted from civil service regulation and ratings, and are not processed by OPM. each agency establishes its own hiring procedures and evaluation criteria to fill vacancies. People employed by independent agencies do not accumulate civil service seniority. The examination for Foreign Service Officer with the Department of State for the 2000-2001 academic year is Saturday, November 4, 2000. Students interested in foreign service positions outside the Department of State can contact selected independent agencies directly. Check with The Career Center for more information.

FEDERAL JOB SCAMS CONSUMER ALERT - FEDERAL JOB FRAUD
Information on job vacancies with the Federal Government and the Postal Service is provided free of charge. However, many Americans are victimized by scam artists selling information about Federal job opportunities. These scam artists place classified advertisements in newspapers, magazines and periodicals offeringfor a feeto help job seekers locate and apply for Federal jobs. Some companies go so far as to use names that imply affiliation with the Federal Government, such as the "U.S. Agency for Career Advancement," or "Postal Employment Service."
Many of these companies advertise the availability of large numbers of Federal jobs in local areas, while in reality few or none may actually exist. For example, the Postal Service has few vacancies for permanent, full-time jobs. Postal Service hiring takes place through 85 district offices at the local level. Openings are announced for a very short time. Your local post office is the best source of information concerning current or anticipated openings. The U.S. Office of Personnel Management's Federal Employment Information System is the official source for employment information and contains Federal job listings as well as some state, local government and private sector listings.
Remember, information about Federal job opportunities is available to the public free of charge, with the exception of local phone company charges for long distance calls. Federal agencies and the Postal Service never charge for applications, sell study guides for examinations, or guarantee that you will be hired. If an examination is required, the agency administering the examination typically offers free sample questions to applicants scheduled for the examination.

He has been particularly committed to protecting the salaries and benefits of Federal employees. Federal employees work side-by-side with our military doing the critical work of the Nation, including ensuring the safety of our citizens. Numerous Federal civilian employees joined forces with their military colleagues to form disaster response teams on September 11th and to respond to the anthrax attacks and the Ricin scare in the Senate office buildings. Now more than ever, an efficient and effective Federal Government requires this kind of civilian/military collaboration. From fighting off attacks on salary increases Federal employees deserve, to safeguarding the benefits of retirees and current employees, to protecting Federal jobs from outsourcing, Senator Sarbanes has worked consistently to protect and support the vital interests of the Nation's Federal workers. About 4 out of 5 Federal employees worked outside the Washington, DC, metropolitan area. Job growth generated by increased homeland security needs may be largely offset by projected slow growth or declines in other Federal sectors due to budgetary constraints, the growing use of private contractors, and the transfer of some functions to State and local governments.

Nature of the Industry About this section Back to Top The Federal Government’s essential duties include defending the United States from foreign aggression and terrorism, representing U.S. interests abroad, enforcing laws and regulations, and administering domestic programs and agencies. U.S. citizens are particularly aware of the Federal Government when they pay their income taxes each year, but they usually do not consider the government’s role when they watch a weather forecast, purchase fresh and uncontaminated groceries, travel by highway or air, or make a deposit at their bank. Workers employed by the Federal Government play a vital role in these and many other aspects of our daily lives.
