Jordan Goodman is the author of Everyone's Money Book , available at . This is the third edition of the book. You can also visit his Web site at www.moneyanswers.com . He talks with us on Thursday mornings. November 13, 2003 "Phony Government Jobs" With unemployment widespread, there has been a recent surge in scams of companies purporting to offer easy access to federal government jobs of course, for a fee. The Federal Trade Commission has just put out a bulletin warning people to stay away from these scams that prey on people's desperation. Typically, these scamsters advertise in the classified sections of local newspapers saying they can help people find and apply for federal jobs. These companies usually use names that sound like those of federal agencies, like "The Agency for Career Advancement" or the "Postal Employment Service." They typically promise that you can get federal jobs "with no experience necessary," and they "guarantee you will get high test scores" for any qualifying exams. They also say they have uncovered "hidden or unadvertised" federal jobs. The ads then direct you to call a toll-free number where the operator tries to push you to buy a valuable booklet filled with job listings, practice test questions and tips for entrance exams. Sometimes, the toll-free number will refer you to a pay-per-call number beginning with 900 that supposedly will give you even more valuable information on federal jobs. These scamsters are praying on people's lack of understanding about the federal hiring process. They give the impression that there is one Civil Service exam for all government jobs, which is not true; in fact, many jobs do not require passing the Civil Service exam at all. Many try to make it look easy to get jobs with the Postal Service, when in fact they have few positions open and you have to take a written exam at one of 85 district offices in order to qualify.

Walters State Community College offers an Associate of Science degree in Criminal Justice.  This degree is designed to fulfill freshman and sophomore level course requirements of a bachelor’s degree; however, the curriculum is not specific for any one college or university.  Students will need to consult a faculty advisor at WSCC or an advisor at the intended transfer institution for particular courses needed at an individual school.  The link for the WSCC Department of Public Safety is: http://www.ws.edu/psafety/default.asp Career and Major Information: Law enforcement personnel are charged with protecting the safety and property of citizens.  These jobs are often stressful and dangerous.  There are different areas of service in criminal justice, and these are discussed below.  Uniformed police officers have general duties.  In small departments, officers may direct traffic, respond to emergencies, or investigate a crime.  In large departments, officers may have specific responsibilities, but all officers are required to write detailed reports and do extensive record keeping. Counties employ sheriffs and deputies.  Sheriffs are usually elected officials.  Deputies perform such duties as patrolling, responding to calls, investigating, fulfilling tasks related to jailed inmates, and participating in court-related activities.

Federal Government, Excluding the Postal Service
Significant Points:
  • About 3 out of 5 Federal workers held managerial, business, financial, or professional jobs in 2002, double the proportion for the workforce as a whole. About 4 out of 5 Federal employees worked outside the Washington, DC, metropolitan area. Employment in the newly created Department of Homeland Security (DHS) will include new hires, as well as workers transferring from other agencies—mostly from within the Departments of Justice, Transportation, Agriculture, and the Treasury. Job growth generated by increased homeland security needs may be largely offset by projected slow growth or declines in other Federal sectors due to budgetary constraints, the growing use of private contractors, and the transfer of some functions to State and local governments.
Nature of the Work About this section To Top
The Federal Government’s essential duties include defending the United States from foreign aggression and terrorism, representing U.S. interests abroad, enforcing laws and regulations, and administering domestic programs and agencies. U.S. citizens are particularly aware of the Federal Government when they pay their income taxes each year, but they usually do not consider the government’s role when they watch a weather forecast, purchase fresh and uncontaminated groceries, travel by highway or air, or make a deposit at their bank. Workers employed by the Federal Government play a vital role in these and many other aspects of our daily lives.

For Release: November 1, 2001 Indiana Company Agrees to Settle Charges of Misrepresenting Availability of U.S. Postal Service and Government Jobs Career Network, Inc. (CNI), based in Crown Point, Indiana, and its principals, Walter Turulis and Kathleen Key, are permanently banned from promoting or selling any employment good or service as part of settlements with the Federal Trade Commission. In addition, the settlement with CNI and Turulis requires them to pay a $25,000 judgment. In April 2001, Kathleen Key entered into a settlement with the FTC that also required her to pay $25,000. The case against CNI was filed in January 2001 as part of Project "Stamp Out Job Fraud," a joint effort between the FTC and the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) to stop the fraudulent sale of employment services. According to the FTC's complaint, the defendants misrepresented: that postal or government conservation positions were locally and currently available; that consumers were likely to obtain postal or government conservation positions using their materials; and their refund policy. The court issued a temporary restraining order against the defendants, froze their assets, and appointed a receiver over CNI.

Postal Service execs get SES privileges
By Tanya N. Ballard
tballard@govexec.com
Executives in the Postal Service's inspector general's office are now considered Senior Executive Service corps equivalents, according to the Office of Personnel Management. OPM has determined that executives in the Postal Service IG's office meet SES standards and, as such, are entitled to the same personnel benefits and privileges as corps members. IG executives can also transfer to SES positions in other agencies and departments. The new status went into effect on Nov. 29. "We have entered into an agreement with the inspector general's office to allow for career senior executives in the SES to move to the office of the IG at the [Postal Service] and vice versa," said Joyce Edwards, director of OPM's Office of Executive Resources Management. "We have a similar agreement with the General Accounting Office."
