Advising Information
Academic advising services for all freshmen Arts and Sciences majors are provided through the Advising Center in McMullen Hall, Room 100. Upon declaring a specific major, Arts and Science majors will be assigned to a faculty advisor in their department for upper-division advising. Advising files for all upper-division students are maintained in the departmental office of the program in which the student is majoring. Although advisors are available to assist students in designing their Plans of Study, students are ultimately responsible for meeting degree requirements.

Ethical Considerations on Housing Research Involving Children
Sept. 19 Critics have questioned the propriety of recent studies regarding housing-related health risks and children. A new report from the National Research Council and the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies outlines how to conduct such research in a way that ultimately improves child health, ensures that child participants do not face inappropriate risks, and fully informs their parents.

Significant Points
  • Almost 4 in 10 atmospheric scientists work for the Federal Government, which is the largest employer of such workers.
  • A bachelor’s degree in meteorology, or in a closely related field with courses in meteorology, is the minimum educational requirement; a master’s degree is necessary for some positions, and a Ph.D. is required for most research positions.
Nature of the Work About this section Back to Top Atmospheric scientists , commonly called meteorologists , study the atmosphere’s physical characteristics, motions, and processes, and the way in which it affects the rest of our environment. The best known application of this knowledge is in forecasting the weather. Aside from predicting the weather, scientists also attempt to identify and interpret climate trends, understand past weather, and analyze today’s weather. However, weather information and meteorological research also are applied in air-pollution control, agriculture, forestry, air and sea transportation, defense, and the study of possible trends in the Earth’s climate, such as global warming, droughts, or ozone depletion. Atmospheric scientists who forecast the weather, known professionally as

Biological Sciences
Anatomy Anatomy is the science dealing with the form and structure of living organisms. Modern human anatomy is particularly concerned with showing how structure is adapted to function. This understanding forms an essential basis for much of biomedical research. The course includes traditional gross anatomy, cell biology, histology, neuroanatomy, embryology and anthropology along with hands-on exposure to modern anatomical research techniques such as scanning and transmission electron microscopy and confocal microscopy. A degree in Anatomy provides a basis for careers based on the biomedical sciences including posts in education, research laboratories and health-care industries. Biochemistry Biochemistry is a relatively new scientific discipline which involves the study of the chemical changes in living cells. It is a subject which has permeated into all other biological disciplines such as biotechnology, environmental studies, genetics and medicine, because these areas regularly use biochemical techniques. It has many agricultural, medical and industrial applications. Graduates in Biochemistry find employment in health-care, pharmaceutical, agricultural and biotechnology-based industries.

Training in meteorology is good preparation for a career as a science teacher at any level. Essential science courses include physics and chemistry.
http://www.ametsoc.org/AMS/pubs/careers.html
The original booklet was produced under the direction of a committee chaired by Warren M. Washington that included Werner A. Baum, Todd Glickman, Ronald D. McPherson, and Pamela Stephens, with input from a large number of AMS members. Henry Lansford, a science writer and communication consultant based in Boulder, Colorado, wrote the booklet and supervised its design and production. It was designed and produced by Michael Shibao of the Graphic Services group at the National Center for Atmospheric Research, which is operated by the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research under the sponsorship of the National Science Foundation. It was reproduced in electronic format for the World Wide Web by staff of the American Meteorological Society.
Careers in Atmospheric Research and Applied Meteorology CONTENTS [tm]

WHY METEOROLOGY? Thousands of career choices are available in our fast-changing society. Why would you choose atmospheric science or applied meteorology? You will find very specific answers in the following pages, but here is a quick look at some of the challenges of our changing atmosphere: Do you have a deep curiosity about the world around you? As a meteorologist, you can satisfy that curiosity by investigating the natural forces that shape our weather and climate. You can look for answers to important questions that our society is asking-how can we save lives, how can we protect our environment? You can use your knowledge to warn others when danger is approaching in the form of tornadoes and
