If you aspire to a doctoral degree and career in the physical sciences and related fields, or wish to support and recruit those who do, NPSC is for you.
http://www.npsc.org/vignettes_tkolda.html
Tamara Kolda has been fascinated with math and science since she was a child growing up in suburban Maryland. As a young girl, she spent her summers attending math and computer camps. Her parents were extremely supportive of all her educational activities. After high school, Tamara went on to attend the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC). She majored in mathematics and was encouraged by her UMBC professors to consider graduate school. She learned of the NPSC program through a fellow student who was one year older, had applied to the program, and had been selected as a runner-up. "My friend's near success convinced me that I had a chance as well, so I applied for the NPSC fellowship the following year." Tamara's NPSC fellowship was sponsored by the National Security Agency (NSA) in Fort Meade, Maryland. "My work experience at the NSA really opened my eyes to the many opportunities in developing algorithms for high-performance computers." By the time she started graduate school at the University of Maryland at College Park, her research focus had shifted from pure to applied mathematics. Her two summers at the NSA led also her on to three summers at a government contractor, the Institute for Defense Analyses Center for Computational Sciences in Bowie, Maryland. Upon graduation, Tamara accepted a postdoctoral fellowship at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, a Department of Energy (DOE) facility in Oak Ridge Tennessee. From there, she went on to her current position as a member of the technical staff in the Computational Sciences and Mathematics Research department at Sandia National Laboratories in Livermore, California.

Careers in Physical Anthropology
Academic Positions
There are many academic careers for appropriately trained physical anthropologists. The most common and traditional job openings are found in anthropology departments in colleges and universities. University departments of genetics, zoology, and biology also offer potential employment. So do community colleges and professional schools. Many schools of medicine rely on biological anthropologists to teach the gross anatomy of the human body to medical and paramedical students. Currently, around one in eight American physical anthropologists has some professional affiliation with a medical school, usually in a department of anatomy. A detailed appreciation of the range of jobs held by physical anthropologists can be gained by studying the membership directory of the AAPA, published every December in the American Journal of Physical Anthropology. To obtain an AAPA pamphlet providing additional details on careers in physical anthropology, contact Dr. Mark Teaford, Chair AAPA Career Development Committee, (Mark F. Biological and Physical Sciences
The Bachelor of Arts degree in biological and physical sciences is a broad-based science program centered around a traditional core of courses in the humanities, social and behavioral sciences, and natural sciences. Courses offered in biological and physical sciences include anatomy, astronomy, biology, botany, chemistry, earth science, environmental conservation, genetics, geology, human physiology, immunology, microbiology, physical geography, physics, and zoology. The program is designed to enable students to tailor their studies to specific career goals. For example, a student interested in a career in psychiatry would want to take courses in anatomy, biology, physics, and chemistry, as well as sociology, psychology, and communications, and then apply to medical school. Students planning to enter graduate school after earning a B.A. degree may want to pursue IU Kokomo's preprofessional tracks in biology, premedicine, and predentistry. Graduates who have followed these tracks have been accepted into advanced programs in medical, dental, optometry, and chiropractic schools throughout the country. The degree program also offers tracks in pre-Doctor of Physical Therapy and pre-Master of Occupational Therapy , which allow students to fulfill all prerequisites for these professional programs while earning a bachelor's degree.

Internship and Research Opportunities
I n addition to the extensive laboratory and classroom experiences offered through the biology program, internship opportunities also are available through IU Kokomo's Undergraduate Research Summer Institute (URSI). Biology majors also may engage in individual study, which involves selecting a research area of interest, developing that research, and then presenting their findings both in writing and in an oral presentation. Such research can count for up to 12 credit hours towards your degree. IU Kokomo students have assisted with research in aquatic physiology, ecological physiology, ecology, microbiology, electrochemistry, and laser physics.

http://advance.uci.edu/images/Our Lives as Women in Physical Sciences.htm
Our Lives as Women in Physical Sciences The UCI ADVANCE program sponsored a forum for all women graduate students and postdoctoral researchers in the School of Physical Sciences entitled "Our Lives as Women in Physical Sciences" Twenty-two women graduate students and postdoctoral scholars attended the forum. A lively discussion followed the introduction of the panel members. Excellent questions were raised and we include some of them below. After the event, Dean Ron Stern encouraged the panel members to write down their responses and post them on the ADVANCE web site in order to create a lasting record for the benefit of future graduate students and postdoctoral scholars both at UCI and in the wider community. Graduate students and postdoctoral researchers are invited to submit additional questions for posting on this web site. Simply email them to the ADVANCE Equity Adviser for Physical Sciences, which currently is Dr. Tammy Smecker-Hane (tsmecker@uci.edu). Questions Raised at the Forum:
    • How hard is it to find two academic positions, one for you and one for your spouse (the "Two-Body Problem")?
The "Two-Body Problem" refers to the fact that it is difficult to find two academic or research positions in any given year at any given university that would be suitable for a couple who are both looking for jobs in academia. As you can imagine, it is even worse if the two people are in the same field of research, because two openings in the same field are even more rare. However the problem is getting easier to solve because universities have begun to recognize that to compete in hiring the most talented people they need to find creative ways of solving the "Two-Body Problem".
