Illinois Department of Natural Resources
Illinois Waste Management and Research Center How did you become interested in working for the Illinois Department of Natural Resources?
I am interested in the laboratory work of the Illinois Waste Management Research Center, which is a part of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR). We deal with environmental issues and try to find solutions to protect the environment.
What were your favorite classes in school?
My favorite classes were biology, chemistry and toxicology.
What kind of schooling do you need to perform the duties associated with your job?
You need a bachelor of science degree to be a chemist and then graduate work (Master of Science or Ph.D.) to be in a supervisory position.
How does your job help the natural resources of Illinois?
Our lab works with researchers to study contamination problems in Illinois areas before remediation or actions can be taken to protect the wildlife and natural resources. Sometimes we analyze the soil from contaminated sites that IDNR wants to buy, and the results help them make a decision.
What do you enjoy most about your job?

The Department of Physical Sciences and Engineering at Prince George's Community College is housed on the third floor of Chesapeake Hall. The Department provides transfer courses in chemistry, engineering, and physics, and elective courses in Earth/Space Sciences. A number of the Department courses support programs in other areas, such as Allied Health or Engineering Technology. At present, twelve full-time faculty members make up the Department with support from a dozen adjunct faculty. A number of full-time and adjunct faculty have received teaching awards. Faculty have kept professionally active by taking leave to spend time at FDA, NASA, and NIST. The Department has a strong emphasis on technology with computers and instrumentation obtained from NSF and DOD grants. The Department is equipped with a GC/MS, FT-IR, UV-VIS, GC, HPLC, AA, and computers with interfaces and numerous probes. Use of graphing calculators and calculator-based laboratories (CBL) is encouraged to strengthen and support use in our Mathematics Department.

The Careers Home Page links to sites providing career information in the sciences. The links are arranged according to scientific field or discipline. Click on the links to the left to visit the field categories for lists of links. Sites that are not restricted to science are listed under "General" whereas those applicable to more than one discipline are listed under "Science". Most of the sites listed on these pages contain information about careers, job opportunities, or career development but a few do not. Those that do not are included for a variety of reasons, but usually because they are important employers of scientists. Most of the employment information is directed to individuals with a BS degree in a field of science but some are primarily for those holding advanced degrees. The services of most of these sites are free but some require membership in the sponsoring organization and some are commercial and charge a fee for their services. Inclusion of commercial sites in the Lander Careers in Science pages does not constitute or imply endorsement by Lander University or the State of South Carolina or their agents. Web sites are born to die. They often have short life spans and frequently disappear within a few months of their creation. This can make using a collection of hotlinks, such as this careers page, a frustrating experience. In any such collection there will always be an annoyingly high percentage of obsolete links that are no longer accessible and it always seems like the links you are most interested in are the ones that won't work anymore. As of August 28, 1997 every link in this collection was active but by the time you use the page many probably will not be. We will attempt, perhaps with your help, to keep the listings current.

Careers for Engineering Physics Graduates
Where do the EP graduates go? Roughly 20 percent to 30 percent choose to go immediately to graduate school. About 20 percent to 25 percent are at Embry-Riddle on ROTC scholarships and go immediately to service obligations. The remaining 50 percent (approx.) to work primarily in the space program in Houston and in Southern California, for example. What are the graduate school opportunities for EP graduates? Our students have gone into programs in physics, chemistry, astronomy, aerospace engineering, electrical engineering, software engineering, and even medical physics. Virtually all have received full assistantships or fellowships to continue their education. They have gone to schools such as Dartmouth, University of Michigan, Penn State, University of Florida, Florida State, M.I.T., Washington University, and The University of Texas-Austin. Are EP graduates limited by the availability of space program jobs? We think they certainly are not. Their education prepares them for careers in applied physics and all sorts of engineering fields. This has been one of the most consistent findings of the Industrial Advisory Board for the EP Program. The broad mathematics, science, engineering, and computer applications gained in EP are the keys to 21st century technology and the developments we cannot yet predict.

  • Chemistry . In addition to the regular degree track, students can select a concentration area: bioscience, business, communication, computer science, education, and polymer science. These options give the chemistry major an advantage in both the job market and graduate school.
  • Geology and Planetary Science . Courses focus on the scientific aspects of the nature of the Earth and other planets. Geology is more than the study of rocks. Did you ever wonder why there are dark spots on the moon? Or, where to dig a new oil well? Studying geology will help you answer these questions and many more.
  • Environmental Geology . In addition to studying the scientific aspects of the Earth, coursework on social and public policy issues is included in this major. How can you save the rain forest if you do not understand why it is being cut down?
  • Physics . Two degree options are available. The BS provides an in-depth background and is for students who wish to pursue careers in a technical field. There is also an astronomy option available. The BA degree is intended for students who wish to pursue careers that require scientific knowledge but are not necessarily technical. Students interested in business can pursue a dual major earning a BA in Physics and Business, giving them a unique advantage in placement with scientific companies.

Career information The Semiconductor Industry is one of the largest industries in the world and offers a wide variety of employment opportunities. It is a major high technology industry in the UK with a high and rapidly increasing demand for graduates with specialist skills. In Scotland there is one of the largest concentrations of semiconductor manufacturers in Europe. New semiconductor devices and new applications for semiconductors continue to be developed. Increasingly, greater numbers of electronic devices are being packed onto a single silicon chip. New methods of continuing this trend are being developed - some of these within Electronic Engineering and Physics. Engineers working in the semiconductor industry require a unique blend of skills and expertise in a number of disciplines including electronics, silicon chip design and fabrication, semiconductor physics, chemistry and material sciences, as provided by this degree.

Physics

Most physicists work in research jobs. In a broad sense, their work relates to the fundamental laws of nature and how different properties of matter relate to one another. Areas of specialization in physics include elementary particle physics; atomic, electron, and molecular physics; optics; acoustics; and the physics of fluids.
Physicists with doctoral degrees have the highest salaries, although there are opportunities in related fields for those with a master's or bachelor's degree. Generally, a doctoral degree is needed to work in research and development, as most physicists do. Competition for these positions, as well as admission to many doctoral physics programs, is usually high due to a limited number of openings.
Most physicists work regular hours in laboratories and offices. Overall, employment of physicists is expected to decline slightly through 2006. Because many research jobs are funded by the federal government, they are often subject to budget cuts and fluctuations in the economy. Again, competition for these jobs is high.
A median salary of about $50,000 was reported for members of the American Institute of Physics who had bachelor's degrees; those with master's degrees earned about $55,000; those with doctoral degrees $65,000. For more information, visit the following web sites:
