Careers in Science
"Whether or not you become a scientist, the basic understanding of scientific reasoning, methodology and principles that you obtain from your first degree in science will be of inestimable value to you." - Justice Robert French, Judge of the Federal Court of Australia and Science Graduate of The University of Western Australia
What sorts of careers are open to science graduates, apart from working in laboratories?
All sorts! Many science students join companies as scientists and move across into management positions. Planning and advisory roles in government agencies are another possibility. Anyone who loves to share their enthusiasm for science should consider working as a science communicator (in museums, in journalism, etc.) or in teaching - science teachers are very much in demand, especially in the physical sciences and mathematics. In fact, the State Government has implemented a program to pay the loan fees of graduates who begin teaching science in 2003.

Careers Opportunities in Physics
A degree in Physics provides many career options. By studying Physics, as well as acquiring an extensive knowledge of the most fundamental physical science, you will develop skills in problem solving, mathematical and numerical analysis, measurement techniques, and organisation and presentation of research results. Many employers value physics graduates for the above skills, which can be applied in a wide range of jobs. Recent UWA Physics graduates have been recruited by State and Commonwealth Governments, organisations such as CSIRO and NASA, companies such as BHP, Rio Tinto, Shell, and various engineering companies, as well as universities and hospitals. Not all physics graduates are employed as Physicists. Rather, they are valued by employers for their extensive knowledge of physical science, skills in problem solving, mathematical and numerical analysis, measurement techniques, and organisation and presentation of research results – all of which can be applied in a wide range of jobs. If a career working in a laboratory or classroom is not for you, did you know that physics graduates are also employed by...

Many of the physical sciences are fundamental sciences; that is, all other sciences are based on these few core areas. A sound background in the physical sciences is necessary and often required by many programs, such as nursing and dental hygiene. This knowledge is also required for people interested in pursuing careers in medicine, biotechnology, engineering, environmental and fire sciences, and other fields. A two-year associate's degree is available for environmental sciences. Program graduates may earn starting salaries upward of $15 per hour. Wages in other areas vary according to the field of interest, but starting salaries can range from $30,000 to $55,000 per year in areas such as biotechnology and engineering.
