Speakers included Phyllis Frelich, award-winning actress; John Kemp, executive director of Very Special Arts; Bob Lynch, president and CEO, Americans for the Arts; Ron Mace, architectural consultant for renovation of the Kennedy Center Concert Hall; and William Ivey, Chairman of the National Endowement for the Arts, as well as panel participants from Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, Non-Traditional Casting Project, U.S. Department of Education, Social Security Admninistration, and Florida Division of Vocational Rehabilitation. Major Resource Kit Theatre Production The Theatre Production major does not prepare students for immediate employment in professional theatre upon graduation from the University. However, should they decide to pursue theatre production as a career, graduates are competitive for applying to graduate training programs. Employment in the theatre, whether in the schools, university or commercial theatre, is extremely competitive, with only the most skilled and gifted succeeding. Positions that are sought after include teachers, promotions/public relations/management specialists, technicians, stage managers, scenic/lighting/costume designers, makeup artists, actors and directors. Education, stage, film and television are examples of popular fields. Majoring in theatre production enhances an individual's organizational and technical skills as well as written and oral expressive abilities. These skills and abilities are assets for many jobs outside of theatre that require an ability to communicate dynamically with others. To learn more about the major in Theatre Production or the minor in Theatre, contact Professor Joann Browning, Associate Chair, Theatre Department, 413 Academy Street, Newark, DE 19716, or call 831-2201, or email at

LA Phil reaches new labor contract Seven months after music director Esa-Pekka Salonen extended his contract through 2008, the Los Angeles Philharmonic Assn. has reached a new four-year agreement with its musicians that makes their base salary comparable to that of the top-paying U.S. orchestras, including the Boston Symphony and the New York Philharmonic. The Philharmonic musicians voted to approve the pact, which will take effect immediately and run through Sept. 20, 2009. In its last year, the minimum weekly salary will be $2,445. The previous, six-year contract culminated in a weekly base of $2,025. Among other provisions, the contract includes measures to streamline the Philharmonic's auditioning, hiring and vesting processes; allows for free local radio broadcasts; reduces the orchestra by two players (through attrition); and redesigns the musicians' healthcare plan.
