Nga Kapa Haka Industry Overview
The performing arts industry employed 1,527,200 people in 2003, with the majority of employees based in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin. The creative sector contributed about 3.1% to GDP (gross domestic product) in the year ending March 2001. This is similar to New Zealand's finance sector, which contributed 3.5% to GDP in the same period. It is estimated that music and the performing arts made an economic contribution of $88 million between 2000 to 2001. Government policy influences industry growth The performing arts industry is growing at a faster rate than the economy as a whole. In particular, there has been major growth in the number of performing arts venues, which rose from 430 in 1999 to 640 in 2003. Growth in the performing arts industry is partly due to increased government focus on the arts over recent years. By fostering the arts, the Government aims to present New Zealand as an innovative, creative country, and to attract investment, new market opportunities and new talent. Building strong creative industries is also expected to help provide more employment opportunities. Several projects have been initiated, and extra funding has been granted by the Government over recent years to build the potential of the performing arts industry.

Think about potential employers, think about how your skills and knowledge can enhance an organization. If you can't think of occupations that can use people schooled in the arts and humanities, then go over to Before You Search and check out our information on Exploring Career Options I have a degree in Music (Performance) from the Boston Conservatory . After graduation, I worked as a library paraprofessional while freelancing. Some organizations actually preferred to hire musicians for administrative duties, citing their ability to concentrate on fine detail work for long periods without fatigue. I also worked as an orchestra librarian before moving into library sciences and obtaining my MLS degree. I still play, I could still freelance if I wanted, but I never sweat public presentations because public speaking is much easier than playing the horn in performance.

Introduction
Are you excited by the possibility of using street theatre to bring a community festival to life? Or by using story telling and dance to enrich the curriculum of an inner-city school? Or by taking performance poetry into one of Britain's jails? If so, Performing Arts could be the course for you. It looks at artistic performance in its broadest sense, which means you will study the subject both in theory in the classroom, and in practice in the studio, cinema, theatre and out in the community. We recognise the vital role that the performing arts have to play in education and in improving people's lives, and you will be able to explore how they can be used to support community development.
Performing Arts is offered as part of a three-year combined honours degree which means you will study it alongside one other subject. Good combinations include Early Childhood Studies; Education and Human Development or Communication, Media and Culture.

The prime entertainer / performer is one who showcases the effort of the whole team. Although the performer may appear spontaneous, he goes thorough rigorous rehearsals - as an actor, musician or a dancer. The performing arts provides opportunities for not only the frontmen (the actors, dancers and musicians), but also to specialists like VJs, RJs, choreographers and even critics.
