Traditional University or Specialty School What's the Best Way to Develop Your Talent?
Budding artists, musicians, and engineering/computer whizzes must make some careful decisions about growing their gifts
by Charlotte Thomas, Career and Education Editor, Peterson's
Knowing what you want to do with your life comes from everyday experiences:
  • Listening to classical music and dreaming about performing that very piece with a symphony orchestra some day.
Remembering that from the time your Mom caught you smearing finger paint all over the walls, you've loved everything about art looking at it, doing it, playing with it.
Or, tinkering with your umpteenth computer and realizing that you've been pulling them apart since fifth grade.
"Preshrunk" is what educational consultant Marcia Rubinstien calls these kinds of students because they know exactly what they want to do with their lives. There's no question that they will go on to an institution that will take their love for music, art, or technology and develop it into a career. However, to test their resolve, she's just as likely to say to such students, "Convince me you're really that committed to your talent." As a consultant, Rubinstien talks to many high school students about their dreams for the future. Oddly enough, she tries to discourage those who say they want to go into the arts, music, or engineering. If they doggedly resist her efforts to steer them away from specialty schools, she knows they'll do well in a place where everyone there lives and breathes their subjects.

Created in 2001 by Kennedy Center President Michael Kaiser and funded through generous support of arts philanthropist Alberto Vilar, the Vilar Institute for Arts Management strives to impart hands-on arts management experience to participants in the fellowship and internship programs. Through practical application of management skills, fellows and interns gain in-depth knowledge and expertise used by successful managers in today's complex world of performing arts.
Fellowships The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts offers valuable skills building for arts managers through the Vilar Institute for Arts Management. The Vilar Fellowship Program provides up to 10 highly motivated, disciplined, and creative artists and arts managers the instruction and experience they need to succeed in today's complex arts environment.
Vilar Fellows enjoy close working relationships with experienced arts professionals, hands-on work opportunities, a structured blend of independent and collective learning experiences, and the opportunity to work in one of the busiest and most artistically diverse performing arts centers in the United States. Fellows are expected to attend performances and educational events, as well as complete significant projects within the context of the Kennedy Center.
Vilar Fellowships are full-time and last 10 months starting in September and ending in June. The Vilar Institute emphasizes excellence, creativity, economic problem solving, strategic planning, internationalism, and a commitment to new technologies.

Visual and Performing Arts INTRODUCTION The Vision
Experience with and knowledge of the arts is a vital part of a complete education. The arts are rich disciplines that include a vibrant history, an exemplary body of work to study, and compelling cultural traditions. An education in the arts is an essential part of the academic curriculum for the achievement of human, social, and economic growth. The education of our students in the disciplines of dance, music, theater, and visual art is critical to their personal success and to the success of New Jersey as we move into the twenty-first century. The arts offer tools for development. They enable personal, intellectual, and social development for each individual. Teaching in and through the arts within the context of the total school curriculum, especially during the formative years of an elementary K-6 education, is key to maximizing the benefits of the arts in education. For students, an education in the arts provides:
