Internships
Internships offer meaningful learning opportunities and on-the-job experiences to college juniors/seniors, graduate students, and recent college graduates (within two years of graduation) who are interested in beginning careers in performing arts management and/or arts education. Approximately 20 students are selected each semester to participate in a three to four month long, full-time (40 hours per week) internship (Fall, September-December; Winter/Spring, January-May; Summer, June-August). Internships may be available in advertising, development, education (local and national programs), National Symphony Orchestra, press relations, production, programming, technology, volunteer management, and finance. Each intern, with their supervisor, develops a list of learning objectives and goals that they would like to accomplish as well as being assigned a project to be completed during their time at the Kennedy Center. Each intern submits a weekly journal, maintains a working portfolio, attends required intern events, and participates in mid-semester and final evaluations. Interns receive a stipend of $800 per month to help defray housing and transportation costs. College credit may be available. Interns attend weekly sessions that are led by executives of the Kennedy Center and other major arts institutions in Washington, D.C. Interns may attend performances, workshops, and classes presented by the Center, free of charge (space available), during their internship.

You may have done a self assessment to discover what occupation to pursue. Or maybe someone (your parent, friend, or significant other) told you about a career option that would be "perfect" for you. While the first approach is more scientific than the second, it isn't fool-proof. A self assessment will leave you with a list of possibilities. You still must do your homework to learn which one is the best choice for you. After you've gathered information on the occupations you are considering, take this quiz to find out which one is right for you.

These pathways are described on the following pages. We sometimes think of Performing Arts as a decoration, something not essential. In fact they lie at the heart of human self-awareness, and individual and social identity. They stimulate imagination and innovation. They keep us in touch with our past and our traditions. No other subject area does so much. It is often said that Performing Arts won't give you a career, or a way to earn any money. But there are many ways in which Performing Arts Studies can help you build a career as well as a life. Here are some of the pathways we have identified. Perhaps one of them fits with your aspirations.

Pathway 2: Performing Arts Administration
Good performers are not necessarily good at organising their work and their lives. They need people who have the skills in administration and organisation essential to make performance events happen - and if those people have a real understanding of what performance is, and what it involves, then they will be better arts administrators, and will be much in demand. In the Performing Arts Studies programme you learn what performance is, and how music, dance and theatre work, but you can also add to that in your degree real skills and knowledge in business. You can, for instance, combine Performing Arts Studies with papers in business management or marketing, economics or personnel management, and then find yourself working with national organisations working in the arts. There are many of them: permanent companies in music, dance or theatre, arts festivals, professional organisations in the various art-forms. You may wish to include Design and Media studies papers and develop special skills in arts marketing. In your first year you will take three six-point papers on the Performing Arts Studies course.

The BRIT School is Britain's only FREE Performing Arts and Technology School . It is an independent, state funded City College for the Technology of the Arts, the only one of its kind dedicated to education and vocational training for the p erforming arts, media, art and design and the technologies that make performance possible. As a school for 14-19 year olds, we are unique and pioneering in our approach to education, but we are not a stage or fame school. We recognise that most of our students intend to make a career in the arts, entertainment and communications industries, but the school expects all to follow full time courses to completion. It is a vocational school; if an applicant is determined on a life devoted to art, dance, music, radio, television/film or theatre, then this could well be the right place.
