A strong music background (including participation in school bands, choirs, or orchestras; performance experience in small groups and as a soloist; and private study) is required. Many students in this concentration have excelled in community groups, such as youth orchestras, and have performed in public concerts and recitals. Music reading skills are required. Music Education (Bachelor of Music) prepares students to teach music in schools or other group settings from early childhood through adulthood. Graduates qualify for a Georgia teaching certificate in K-12 music. In addition to performance, students in this concentration study child development and learning, as well as methods of teaching music. Applicants should have a strong background in music performance and music reading, and should have a particular interest in sharing their love of music with others. Tell your mom or dad you want to be a music professional, and you might hear a reaction that, is not melodious. Your parents know success can be elusive for a performer, no matter how talented, and that music is a hard way to make a living. But there is more to the music industry than playing for a paying public. Many who follow their musical callings insist that, from a cappella to zydeco, music careers are as varied as the styles they encompass. "There's a perception that you're taking a big risk by pursuing a career in music," says music teacher Matt Colbert. "My argument is that there are so many different occupations, you don't have to give up music for something else. People need to realize that they can combine music with other interests for a rewarding career."

129. MUN School Of Music: For Prospective Students
careers in music The School of music knows that there are many ways of being a musician and tries to reflect that fact in its admission procedures.
http://www.mun.ca/music/pros/
You Want to be a Musician Entry is very competitive. In recent years the School has accepted fewer than half the candidates who have applied; in some performance media the acceptance rate is one in four or one in five. Because of the restricted number of places we cannot always offer admission to every qualified student. Therefore, to be sure of admission you need to demonstrate a high level of accomplishment in several of the following areas. Making Music Music Literacy Hands on! Your knowledge of music theory must also be at your fingertips. If your principal instrument is not piano, you will need to demonstrate basic keyboard skills. Check the requirements for the piano proficiency test. If you cannot play the required pieces, or if your sight reading at the piano is poor, it would be a good idea to take piano lessons before entry to the School. The School of Music does not offer remedial instruction in piano. Passing the piano proficiency test is an exit requirement, not an entry requirement. But smart money is on the student who has this skills well in hand. Music literacy is most effectively developed if it is cultivated hand in hand with your performance instruction. Make sure that your instrument teacher dedicates a little lesson time each week to explaining the theory that underlies what you practice. Do some drill work with your teacher. Test yourself regularly.

Think about potential employers, think about how your skills and knowledge can enhance an organization. If you can't think of occupations that can use people schooled in the arts and humanities, then go over to Before You Search and check out our information on Exploring Career Options I have a degree in Music (Performance) from the Boston Conservatory . After graduation, I worked as a library paraprofessional while freelancing. Some organizations actually preferred to hire musicians for administrative duties, citing their ability to concentrate on fine detail work for long periods without fatigue. I also worked as an orchestra librarian before moving into library sciences and obtaining my MLS degree. I still play, I could still freelance if I wanted, but I never sweat public presentations because public speaking is much easier than playing the horn in performance.

Traditional University or Specialty School What's the Best Way to Develop Your Talent?
Budding artists, musicians, and engineering/computer whizzes must make some careful decisions about growing their gifts
by Charlotte Thomas, Career and Education Editor, Peterson's
Knowing what you want to do with your life comes from everyday experiences:
  • Listening to classical music and dreaming about performing that very piece with a symphony orchestra some day.
Remembering that from the time your Mom caught you smearing finger paint all over the walls, you've loved everything about art looking at it, doing it, playing with it.
Or, tinkering with your umpteenth computer and realizing that you've been pulling them apart since fifth grade.
"Preshrunk" is what educational consultant Marcia Rubinstien calls these kinds of students because they know exactly what they want to do with their lives. There's no question that they will go on to an institution that will take their love for music, art, or technology and develop it into a career. However, to test their resolve, she's just as likely to say to such students, "Convince me you're really that committed to your talent." As a consultant, Rubinstien talks to many high school students about their dreams for the future. Oddly enough, she tries to discourage those who say they want to go into the arts, music, or engineering. If they doggedly resist her efforts to steer them away from specialty schools, she knows they'll do well in a place where everyone there lives and breathes their subjects.
