Careers in Music
Graduates of the School of Music find employment in many music and music related fields, while some undergraduates continue their education in graduate school. Below are descriptions of career opportunities for the degree sequences offered by the School.
There are numerous possibilities when contemplating a career in music. The most obvious first thought is music performance.
Music Performance is a widely diverse topic. Music performance requires the development of a high degree of skill on an individual instrument or voice, or development of compositional skills. Career opportunities include, but is not limited to, the following: playing in a regional or major orchestra; performing in a military band or orchestra; performing as a jazz musician in a group or as a solo artist; singing in a regional or major opera house; performing musicals in major and regional venues; performing as a soloist; performing in smaller chamber music ensembles; composing music; and serving as a paid accompanist or church organist. Often those involved in the aforementioned activities also teach privately, imparting their skills to a new generation of performers or composers. Music Education is also a very popular career choice and is one that often promises a greater certainty of employment. Certification requirements are specified by the state for those desiring to teach in public schools. Those in this field are involved working with school-age students in the following: directors of school bands and/or orchestras; directors of choirs; instructors of general music; instructors of music theory, music history, and/or music appreciation. A very appealing aspect of this profession is the opportunity to make a positive impact on young people through music. It is generally accepted that most all those accomplishing a great deal as music professionals were positively influenced at some point in their lives by a music educator.

CAREERS FOR A CHANGING MARKETPLACE by Nancy Uscher At first glance, the American-trained artists described here seem terribly familiar. They have the usual histories: The violinist earned a doctorate at Julliard, studying with Ivan Galamian and Dorothy DeLay, and then spent a year in Vienna on a Fulbright scholarship. The young soprano was a music major at Connecticut College and president of her high school choir. The promising cellist graduated from the Eastman School of Music and went on to become principal cellist of an orchestra in Canada. With two degrees from the University of Houston, the composer earned a doctorate from Boston University and became an assistant professor there. th Walter Verdehr, a native of Gottschee, Yogoslavia, spent his early years in Austria. At the age of eight he received his first violin lesson and studied for two years in Graz, Austria, with Marianne Kroemer, who founded the European String Teachers Association. After coming to California with his parents, he met Sascha Jacobson at the Music Academy of the West and studied with him before attending Julliard. He subsequently joined the faculty at Michigan State University as the first violinist of the Beaumont Quartet. In 1971 he married Elsa Ludewig-Verdehr, a clarinet Virtuoso and professor at the same university. Verdehr ha been active as a teacher and violin soloist, but one of his most remarkable career achievements has been the creation of the Verdehr Trio, cofounded with his wife and the pianist Gary Kirkpatrick. More than 30 new works have been commissioned for the ensemble.

Whatever your musical preference, chances are you remember exactly what songs were popular when you first fell in love, attended your high school prom or went to your first funeral. Music holds memories. It can soothe us when we're nervous or angry, motivate us when we're feeling lazy, even get us to do an extra leg lift during an aerobics workout. We use it to worship, mourn, celebrate, and mark other passages in our lives, big and small. All this means that people in the music business have a lot of power. What they teach, write, perform, and record is disseminated to millions of people around the world, often becoming an intimate and important part of their lives.

Want to work in the music industry?
You know the names of all the best new bands and where their records got in the charts and you're dying to join one of UK's most glamorous and successful industries. Well, you're not alone there. Every year, hundreds of school leavers and college graduates, not to mention other young people who feel they're wasted in dead end jobs, share the same dreams as you. Sadly, for most of them that's all it will be. A dream. For one simple reason. There are few jobs going. And the competition for those that are is fierce indeed. It may make the biggest headlines, but the music industry in the UK is actually quite small. There are under a thousand record companies, 250 recording studios, 30 pressing plants, 350 music publishers, 4,5000 record shops and music promotion companies of one type or another.

Central High School Trojan Hall of Fame inductes Ken Bell, Mel Gee, Hal Johnson, Mel Larimer and Bob Lober
By Carol South
Herald contributing writer
The Trojan Hall of Fame inducted five new members earlier this month, celebrating the achievements and contributions of Ken Bell, Mel Gee, Hal Johnson, Mel Larimer and Bob Lober.
A mix of Central High School alumni and others who contributed to the school in their own way, this year's Hall of Fame class was acknowledged during a ceremony at the school as well as at graduation. They will also be recognized at a football game next fall. A display about each Hall of Fame member is featured in the school's main lobby.
Current teachers Larry Nykerk and Steve Lockman inaugurated the Hall of Fame last year to give current students a sense of the school's rich history and tradition. Community members nominated the five inductees; in one case, students instigated the honors.
For more information on the Trojan Hall of Fame, to make a contribution or a future nomination, contact Nykerk at 933-7453.
