... careers in music Music Tech "The show must go on." That's about the only hard and fast rule in entertainment. And today's live shows are all about technology. Without tremendously complicated sound and lighting, there'd be no such thing as an arena concert. It takes a crew of several hundred people to put on an arena concert and about half of that crew will be setting up and running all the technological bits that make the concert an experience to be revered by the fans. And the magic of the recording studio also depends on technology. Studio wizards are almost always a cross between talented musician and mad scientist. From building the studio and control room to maintaining all the musical toys in top condition, there are tech jobs aplenty in music. Here are some examples: Live sound engineer
Live sound engineering is the extreme sport of the music biz. You don't get a second chance to mix the music right because it's live and in front of an audience. You can't rewind the tape or ask the musicians to do it over again. Sound engineering also requires a lot of improvising ability because something is almost always going wrong in a live setting: A microphone doesn't work, a power amplifier burns out, or any other number of bugs can creep in. You also have to have a good ear and adjust the mix constantly, because every club, hall, or coliseum sounds different, and its sound changes with the number of people in it. Recording engineer
It's no accident that what you hear on a CD sounds great. Recording engineers have to perfect an important and complicated craft of taking each of the instruments and every singer's part, and making it sound its very best, not just by itself, but in the context of the band and the song. It takes a great knowledge of sound, the equipment in the studio, and the fine art of translating what the artist or producer wants into what the ear should ultimately hear. Many music schools now offer courses in recording engineering, and some schools are devoted entirely to it. If you get around to recording your band to make your own CDs, you'll gain valuable insight into the challenge of sound engineering. Most successful bands have at least one member who has a good understanding of the recording process. Maybe that member is you.

Careers in the Opera So you want to be an opera singer? Men and women who are professional opera singers study music, performing arts, and vocal performance. Their on-stage performance is the culmination of years of work with private vocal coaches, musicians, and directors. The best route leading to a professional career in opera is academically based. A young singer should apply to colleges or universities with strong vocal music departments. It is crucial for a young person to work with a voice teacher with whom they can progress artistically, academically, and professionally. Area colleges/universities with vocal music/opera theater departments: There are other colleges and universities that have vocal music departments. Consult your high school choral director or music teacher for additional information. There are also lots of other jobs with an opera company. To prepare for these, several universities offer programs in arts administration. At the graduate level, these programs are highly selective. Undergraduate programs are offered at the University of Kentucky and Bellarmine College. Graduate programs are offered at Indiana University and the University of Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music. Other universities that offer graduate arts administrative studies are New York University, University of Wisconsin, and UCLA.

Pushing the Big Red Button
By NATHAN HOLSTEIN
Personal experiences on the job market
Previous articles
Easy-to-print version E-mail this story As a 40-year-old with a doctorate in music performance and six fruitless years on the academic job market, I'm now considering chucking it all and pushing the Big Red Button. The Nuclear Option. That's right: law school. Ever since receiving my law-school acceptance letters, I've twisted myself into an anxious pretzel, trying to imagine life as a lawyer. I know what life is like as a classical musician I've been doing it since I was 12 and the stage holds few surprises. As an adjunct and visiting instructor for six years, I've gotten pretty good at teaching courses in music theory and appreciation. In fact, I'd have to say I'm living my dream life in my small mountain town in the West: I'm the concertmaster of the local orchestra, and first violinist of an educational quartet. I'm first call for most other groups, including a baroque orchestra and a contemporary ensemble. I teach one or two courses a quarter as an adjunct at Provincial State University in town. And even with a small studio of private students, I still have plenty of time to pursue my outdoor passions: cycling, skiing, hiking, and fishing. At the age of 40, I'm in the best physical shape of my life, and I'm finally beginning to master the art of fly fishing.

Information and Suggestions compiled by Karen Stafford
You've just started college, or possibly you've completed a year or two and are contemplating a change. Time for decisions. Or, time to pick that major! And you (or your student)want to go into music. But, the questions are many: Do I possibly want to go into performing? Do I REALLY want to teach? Is there any other choice besides performing and teaching? Before you decide, you need to explore all the possibilities in music:
  • Teaching elementary (you can get certification in more than one field, too) Teaching secondary performance groups Teaching at the college level (this can be possible with just a performance degree, although the competition is stiff) Music historian Developing music software (great if you have a talent in computers and/or art) Making or repairing instruments Recording studios (in the booth itself) Managing performers (how are you at the art of persuasion?) Music therapy (a field getting more and more positive recognition)

Teaching in Elementary/Secondary Schools
Clearly, the largest number of full-time music teaching positions exists in public and private schools. In preschools, kindergartens, elementary schools, and day-care centers, the music teacher provides guidance for activites such as singing, listening, playing instruments, moving and dancing, composing, and experimenting with music patterns. Teachers, supervisors, or directors of music in middle, junior high, and senior high schools provide direction for choral and instrumental organizations, small ensembles, and musical theater productions. Music instruction in the secondary school also includes courses in general music, theory, music history, literature, and the related arts. Music eduators in the public schools may find opportunities for extra remuneration for service as conductors of church choirs, community music organizations, or recreational programs. In many communities, the music department of the public schools is the focal point of the community's musical life.
