61. How To Be A Music Journalist, Music Journalism Careers By Sean McManus

Music journalism careers
This section contains excerpts from the ebook 'Journalism Careers: Your Questions Answered' , which answers 64 of your questions about working in - and breaking into - media. I've reproduced a couple of the answers specific to music journalism here. The full ebook has six questions specific to music journalism, tips on interview technique and pages of advice on getting started as a journalist, pitching stories to magazines successfully and freelancing.
How can I get into music journalism?
Here's a theory. To be a music journalist, you'll either need:
  • A good knowledge of the greats. You have to put today's music in context; or
  • To specialise in a particular type of music (eg, folk, country, trip-hop, ambient); or
  • To be a musician. This opens doors on the musicians' magazines.
There probably are opportunities if you don't fit those three categories, but it's a competitive marketplace so it's important you can differentiate yourself. Staff jobs do get advertised from time to time, but your best approach might be to work freelance. It'll give you the freedom to write about other subjects (so you can do non-music writing to bring your average pay up) and you'll have greater creative freedom by writing for different magazines.

Nature of the Work Working Conditions Employment Training, Other Qualifications, and Advancement ... Sources of Additional Information
Significant Points
  • Part-time schedules and intermittent unemployment are common; many musicians supplement their income with earnings from other sources.
  • Aspiring musicians begin studying an instrument or training their voices at an early age.
  • Competition for jobs is keen; those who can play several instruments and perform a wide range of music styles should enjoy the best job prospects.
Nature of the Work About this section Back to Top Musicians, singers, and related workers play musical instruments, sing, compose or arrange music, or conduct groups in instrumental or vocal performances. They may perform solo or as part of a group. Musicians, singers, and related workers entertain live audiences in nightclubs, concert halls, and theaters featuring opera, musical theater, or dance. Although most of these entertainers play for live audiences, many perform exclusively for recording or production studios. Regardless of the setting, musicians, singers, and related workers spend considerable time practicing, alone and with their band, orchestra, or other musical ensemble. Musicians often gain their reputation or professional standing in a particular kind of music or performance. However, those who learn several related instruments, such as the flute and clarinet, and who can perform equally well in several musical styles, have better employment opportunities. Instrumental musicians, for example, may play in a symphony orchestra, rock group, or jazz combo one night, appear in another ensemble the next, and work in a studio band the following day. Some play a variety of string, brass, woodwind, or percussion instruments or electronic synthesizers.

Nature of Work
Music therapists plan, organize, and direct music activities that will produce behavior changes in persons who have mental, emotional, and physical disabilities. While many music therapists are employed in psychiatric hospitals and rehabilitative facilities, school systems are increasingly recognizing the value of including music therapy in their curriculum. Music therapists often foster and develop an appreciation and love for music with students who have disabilities.
