This means that college graduates use their education in a wide variety of fields, and your future career may relate more to your personal career interests, work values and transferable skills than any specific academic major. However, the following list contains a representative sample of job titles of former graduates with an Music major. Use this as an idea list, and remember that it represents some, but certainly not all, of the careers you might consider. Students obtaining employment immediately upon graduation are usually those with the best college records and a willingness to relocate to find a job. Some of these jobs also require education beyond a bachelors' degree.

  • Music Teaching in Elementary and Secondary Schools
Clearly, the largest number of full-time music teaching positions exists in public and private schools. In preschools, kindergartens, elementary schools, and day-care centers, the music teacher provides guidance for activities such as singing, listening, playing instruments, moving and dancing, composing, and experimenting with music patterns. Teachers, supervisors, or directors of music in middle, junior high, and senior high schools provide direction for choral and instrumental organizations, small ensembles, and musical theater productions. Music instruction in the secondary school also includes courses in general music, theory, music history, literature, and the related arts. Music educators in the public schools may find opportunities for extra remuneration for service as conductors of church choirs, community music organizations, or recreational programs. In many communities, the music department of the public schools is the focal point of the community's musical life.

After graduation, I worked as a library paraprofessional while freelancing. Some organizations actually preferred to hire musicians for administrative duties, citing their ability to concentrate on fine detail work for long periods without fatigue. I also worked as an orchestra librarian before moving into library sciences and obtaining my MLS degree. I still play, I could still freelance if I wanted, but I never sweat public presentations because public speaking is much easier than playing the horn in performance.

    • Musicians often have part-time schedules and irregular unemployment, so many of them supplement their income with earnings with other jobs.
    • Young children aspiring to become musicians begin early playing and studying an instrument.
    • Because competition for jobs is intense, the most qualified candidates are those with training in numerous instruments and the abilities to perform a variety of music genres.
    Music and Singing Career Overview
Musicians, singers, and related workers careers’ include: playing musical instruments, singing, composing and arranging pieces, or conducting choirs or instrumental groups. Musicians, singers, and related workers perform independently or in groups to live audiences in nightclubs, concert halls, and theaters which hold operas, musicals, and dance performances. Even though the majority of these performers perform for live audiences, several perform solely for recording or production studios. Regardless of the situation, musicians, singers, and related workers practice a great deal, whether alone or with their band, orchestra, or other musical company.
Musicians usually achieve their name or professional standing in a certain genre of music or performance. However, some musicians who have are able to play more than one instrument, such as the flute and clarinet, and are equally talented at playing both; will have a wider range of employment opportunities. For example, someone who plays instruments may perform in a symphony orchestra, rock group, or jazz combo or work in a studio band over the course of a few days. Some play a variety of instruments including string, brass, woodwind, or percussion. They may also play electronic synthesizers.

Making the decision to major in music and go on to graduate school in music is one that requires serious thought and planning. In the current environment, the number of applicants for academic positions in music far exceeds the number of openings. It is important for students to plan their careers carefully and think about career plans well before they are nearing the end of graduate school. This page will provide some specific information about issues related to this career choice. Questions to Consider As a part of making the decision to major in music Joel Mott, a student at Austin College, compiled the following list of questions to be asked of music professionals. Learning about the experiences of others who have faced similar decision in the past is a logical first step in the process. Students who have other questions they would like see added to this list should send them to gray@colleges.org

    Graduates and Careers
    Careers in Music
There exists a great diversity of choice for someone seeking employment in music related fields at the present time. However, very few of these options offer an adequate sole income. For example, very few composers are lucky enough to have an adequate income from composition alone; most will have to supplement their income with private teaching, tertiary teaching, etc. The same can be said for performers. There are many people who do make a relatively good income from several sources, often all in music related fields. For instance it is quite common to find people working simultaneously as freelance performers, composers (often for film or television) as well as doing private instrumental teaching. This diversity of options means that it is possible to construct a complementary combination of income-earning skills based upon a person's individual talents and interests provided that some care is given to initial planning. It also takes a significant amount of time and dedication to become established in the chosen areas. There are many lucrative career opportunities that have a component of music as well as involving other skills. This is particularly true in areas involving technology and computers. Computer literacy is a distinct advantage in almost all areas of employment and is particularly important in some areas of music. The rapid development of digital technologies has made some employment options redundant while at the same time creating a wealth of new opportunities. These new technologies have implications in all areas of music from academic studies to performance, composition and beyond.
