Military Career Overview
Military careers offer a vast array of occupational groupings. Comprised of active Army, Navy, Marine Corps, and Air Force, as well as their Reserve components and National Guard, work placements are set to embrace such diverse activities as managing a hospital, commanding a tank, programming computers, operating a nuclear reactor, or repairing and maintaining planes and helicopters. Educational training and work experience in these and many other fields is provided by the military to more than 2.5 million people nation wide.
Two distinct types of military occupations are characterized; enlisted positions and officer careers. The greater part of the Armed Forces, about 85 percent, is comprised of enlisted personnel. It is their primary duty to carry out and execute the fundamental operations of the military in areas such as combat, administration, construction, engineering, health care, and human services. In contrast, the primary role of an Officer is to act as a leader, supervising and managing activities, performance, and conduct throughout the Armed Forces in each occupational sphere.
Enlisted occupational groups
  • Administrative Careers
  • Combat Specialty Occupations
Combat specialty occupations encompass elite teams of enlisted, specially trained reinforcement crews who provide immediate help to the military at anytime and throughout all regions of the world. Working aboard aircraft, ships, submarines and through all manner of terrain and weather, these special-operations teams are readily called upon for difficult and dangerous missions. Such teams include the infantry, artillery, and special forces who specialize in operating weapons or in carrying out particular missions during combat. Persons involved in this line of work may be trained to operate tanks and assault vehicles as well as fire artillery, guns and missiles; and may be asked to assist in various raids, demolitions, search-and rescue missions, and intelligence operations.

    Careers In The Military:
Army, Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps The Army
Twenty or so years ago the job market was competitive and tight at its best. Len and LaCarole began contemplating their career goals while dating in college. LaCarol's father, a retired senior Arm y Sergeant, offered her this advice, "Keep a duffle bag of options. The R.O.T.C. program is your opportunity to become an Army officer. You should go for it." She took his advice. Len had already joined the R.O.T.C. program. Both found that the professors of Military Science and other staff members were invaluable, comparable to those found at HBCUs. Both completed the R.O.T.C. program, thinking that a strategically, well thought out plan to use both their degrees and the R.O.T.C. program would eventually lead them to self-fulfilling and profitable lifestyles. Their years of service in the United States Army challenged them to adopt the highest standards and values under very adverse situations. Their military environment depended on teamwork and peer socialization that were far greater than those of most fraternities and sororities. In the Army, they received intense training, discipline, challenging assignments, comradeship, travel, responsibility, and were required to keep physically fit. The pressures to stay physically fit became a way of life. During their travels, both LaCarole and Len, now married, were able to stay together as a family, in assignments in Germany and "stateside." The Army supported their family orientation: Their children were born while they were on active duty.
