U.S. Environmental Protection Agency When they consider the direction in which they will pursue their careers, life science graduates face more than a simple choice between academe and industry. Government service represents a prominent third way. In many ways, the fundamental approach of government science falls between the basic structure of academic research and the product oriented methodology of industry. “We’re not as basic as academic scientists might be and perhaps not as applied as industry scientists,” explains William Farland, acting deputy assistant administrator for science in the Office of Research and Development at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). “We have some middle ground.” Work for the government carries one unique responsibility. “Government science by definition involves working for the people,” says Rich Greene, director of the Office of International Research Programs at the Agricultural Research Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). “We even take an oath of office.”
