Employment Data, Job Duties, and Training Program Information

As a follow-up to the interfire.org article “How to Become a Fire Investigator” and in response to e-mails from students, this article discusses more specific information on how to pursue fire investigation as a career. First, it reviews the occupational outlook for fire investigation careers (as compiled by the Bureau of Labor Statistics), it then suggests books to read to get a feel for the fire investigator’s job, and it concludes with a brief survey of training programs and scholarships in the fire investigation field. What are the Employment Prospects for Fire Investigators? Who Employs Fire Investigators? Before summarizing the data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, we should first consider the variety of ways in which fire investigators are employed. Fire investigators are employed by:
  • Federal government agencies, such as the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives
  • State government, such as the State Police or State Fire Marshal
  • Local government and public safety agencies
  • Private companies, most specifically insurance companies and private sector investigation companies

Volunteer Fire Police Captain Dies From Injury-Related Complications After Being Struck By Motor Vehicle While Directing Traffic - New Jersey
SUMMARY
On February 23, 2003, law enforcement and fire department units were dispatched to a motor vehicle incident (MVI) at a State Highway/Township road intersection. Emergency personnel (fire fighters and fire police) were on the scene for approximately 30 minutes when a vehicle struck the victim while he was directing traffic in a heavy fog. On-scene personnel, trained as emergency medical technicians, came to the aid of the victim. He was then transported to the trauma center of a local hospital for further treatment. The victim was scheduled to be released from the hospital on March 01, 2003, but was not due to complications. The victim remained in the hospital until April 19, 2003, when he died as a result of complications from his injuries. NIOSH investigators concluded that, to minimize the risk of similar occurrences, fire departments should
  • ensure that the placement of various types of warning devices (portable signs, orange traffic cones, flares and/or portable changeable message signs) informs drivers of what to expect when approaching an incident scene

Significant Points
  • Local government employs more than three times as many service workers than does State government; most are firefighters and law enforcement workers. The attacks of September 11, 2001, will increase demand for police, firefighters, and other emergency personnel; however, budgetary constraints may force spending cuts in other areas, slowing overall employment growth. Employer-provided benefits are more common among State and local government employees than among workers in the private sector.

Nature of the Industry About this section Back to Top State and local governments provide their constituents with vital services, such as transportation, public safety, healthcare, education, utilities, and courts. Excluding education and hospitals, State and local governments employ about 7.9 million workers, placing them among the largest employers in the economy. Around two-thirds of these employees work for local governments, such as counties, cities, special districts, and towns. (State and local government hospitals are included in the health services industry and public education is a major part of educational services, both of which are discussed elsewhere in the

Concerns Over Firefighting Ad Heat Up
Navy Says Callers In Control
POSTED: 5:51 pm PDT August 1, 2005 UPDATED: 6:06 pm PDT August 1, 2005 SAN DIEGO It's a tight job market in San Diego, and often job hunters turn to the classifieds for opportunities. But the classified ads don't always tell the whole story, 10News reported. 10News opened the classifieds recently to find an ad for firefighters. It looked like a great opportunity for men and women who want to protect and serve, but when you call the number listed, it doesn't ring at the fire station. 10News called the ad found in the Union-Tribune classifieds. The ad was for firefighters and stated no experience was necessary. It also said there was paid training, relocation and benefits. It said ages 17 to 34 could apply by calling a toll free 800 number. But if you call, you end up on a phone list, and eventually called back by a telephone room salesperson. 10News found out it was a U.S. Navy ad, but no where in the ad does it say it's a U.S.Navy recruiting effort.
