Graduate School: An Entry Level Degree in the Environmental Field An Excerpt from EarthWork: A Resource Guide to Nationwide Green Jobs (out of print)
By The Student Conservation Association, Inc. Edited by Joan Moody and Richard Wizansky Chapter 4: Green Graduate Schools Thinking about whether graduate school is worth the time and money? According to an expert with experience both in academia and in government hiring, "Graduate education is becoming the entry level degree in natural resources." Frank Gregg, former director of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management and of the University of Arizona's School of Renewable Natural Resources, says the days are gone when a bachelor's degree was enough for many natural resources jobs. By contrast, jobs are readily available with a bachelor's in environmental engineering or in other environmental specialties, where demand exceeds supply. In the natural resources disciplines, however, there is a kind of buyer's market except in specialties such as wetlands ecology.
