Welcome to Careers
Did you know?
The word engineer is the modern word for the Latin term ingeniator , which describes one who contrives, designs or invents . It comes from the word ingenium , which means natural talent or genius . From this we also derive the word ingenious , meaning skilful - a talent for invention or construction
Can you imagine?
Can you imagine a world where cities have become peaceful and serene because cars and buses are whisper quiet; vehicles exhaust only water vapour; and parks have replaced unneeded urban freeways. Living standards have dramatically improved, particularly for the poor and those in developing countries. Houses can pay part of their own mortgage costs by the energy they produce; there are few if any acrive landfills; forest cover is increasing world-wide; CO2 levels are decreasing for the first time in 200 years; and the effluent water leaving factories is cleaner than the water going in.
Engineering is an exciting profession that really helps to change and improve our world. Engineers can create imaginative and visionary solutions to the challenges facing the planet in this new century - the problems of feeding the world and how we will use energy but still protect our environment.

ENGINEERING IS EVERYWHERE.
It gives shape to our world. Everyone knows things like cars, computers, airplanes, and bridges are all products of imaginative engineering. But so are bubble gum, baseball bats, movie special effects, roller coasters, and synthetic human tissue replacements. Engineers have a hand in designing, creating, or modifying nearly everything we touch, wear, eat, see, and hear in our daily lives. Their innovations fuel economic growth, fortify national security systems, improve healthcare, and safeguard the environment. An engineering education starts with a creative child's first lesson in science or math. The teacher who delivers that lesson, and the lessons that follow, is an engineering educator, and our mission at ASEE is to help engineering educators do their jobs as well as they can. Especially now, with U.S. science and math learning in decline and technology increasingly driving global change, the job of delivering this education is harder, but more important, than ever.

Nature of the Work About this section Back to Top Civil engineers design and supervise the construction of roads, buildings, airports, tunnels, dams, bridges, and water supply and sewage systems. Civil engineering, considered one of the oldest engineering disciplines, encompasses many specialties. The major specialties within civil engineering are structural, water resources, environmental, construction, transportation, and geotechnical engineering. Many civil engineers hold supervisory or administrative positions, from supervisor of a construction site to city engineer. Others may work in design, construction, research, and teaching.
Employment About this section Back to Top Civil engineers held about 228,000 jobs in 2002. More than 4 in 10 were employed by firms providing architectural, engineering, and related services, primarily developing designs for new construction projects. Almost one-third of the jobs were in Federal, State, and local government agencies. The construction industry accounted for most of the remaining employment. About 15,000 civil engineers were self-employed, many as consultants. Civil engineers usually work near major industrial and commercial centers, often at construction sites. Some projects are situated in remote areas or in foreign countries. In some jobs, civil engineers move from place to place to work on different projects.
