Criminal Justice What It Means:
Popular culture thrills us with portrayals of local, state and federal enforcement agencies, crime scene investigators and detectives who solve complicated crimes using their powers of deduction and sophisticated technology. However, these are only some of the more high-profile jobs in the field of criminal justice. Criminal Justice professionals work in a variety of positions, both in the public eye and behind the scenes. There are entry level positions, for example, in local law enforcement, including sheriff's departments and juvenile justice centers; state law enforcement including the court system and attorneys general offices; federal law enforcement including the Department of Homeland Security and the Office of the Inspector General; and private companies including insurance companies and security patrol officers.
Criminal justice is one of America's fastest-growing career fields. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment for correctional officers, law enforcement officers and security officers is projected to increase as much as 35% through 2010.*
What It Means To You:
The Criminal Justice program of study at the ITT Technical Institutes1 teaches fundamentals of the criminal justice system and criminal justice skills. The program offers a foundation in criminal law, legal procedures, criminal evidence and criminology. Areas of study include law enforcement, the courts and corrections.

Two years ago, Isabel's husband killed their maid. He was drunk, and often violent when drunk. He confessed in the morning, but the police had already accused his wife. An Indigenous woman from a small town in northern Guatemala, who mostly communicates in her native language, she did not understand much of what was said by the police, or later, by the judges. Her lawyer advised her to say nothing. She spent 13 months in jail waiting for the trial. At the trial, she wanted to make a statement to reveal that her husband had committed the murder in a drunken stupor, but she was not allowed to speak. Nor was her husband. Isabel was sentenced to 25 years. Her lawyer preferred not to appeal in fear that the sentence would be increased.

Many federal investigators work on cases that involve violations of federal law. These are the criminal investigators who work as FBI agents, US Marshall deputies, IRS special agents, and postal inspectors, among others. They examine financial records to solve cases of white-collar crime, monitor court-ordered wiretaps of people suspected of breaking federal law, interview witnesses in cases of drug trafficking, and do undercover work. Their jobs can be dangerous and sometimes involve using firearms and making arrests. The federal government also employs a host of non-criminal investigators who do everything from checking airplanes to investigating the immigration status of non-citizens living in the United States. However, these investigators often uncover criminal violations and end up collaborating with federal criminal investigators. In addition, they sometimes face situations as risky as those confronted by criminal investigators, and some also carry firearms and have the right to arrest people.

Nature of the Work Working Conditions Employment Training, Other Qualifications, and Advancement ... Sources of Additional Information
Significant Points
  • Police work can be dangerous and stressful.
  • Civil service regulations govern the appointment of police and detectives.
  • Competition should remain keen for higher paying jobs with State and Federal agencies and police departments in affluent areas; opportunities will be better in local and special police departments that offer relatively low salaries or in urban communities where the crime rate is relatively high.
  • Applicants with college training in police science or military police experience should have the best opportunities.
Nature of the Work About this section Back to Top People depend on police officers and detectives to protect their lives and property. Law enforcement officers, some of whom are State or Federal special agents or inspectors, perform these duties in a variety of ways, depending on the size and type of their organization. In most jurisdictions, they are expected to exercise authority when necessary, whether on or off duty. Uniformed police officers Police agencies are usually organized into geographic districts, with uniformed officers assigned to patrol a specific area, such as part of the business district or outlying residential neighborhoods. Officers may work alone, but in large agencies they often patrol with a partner. While on patrol, officers attempt to become thoroughly familiar with their patrol area and remain alert for anything unusual. Suspicious circumstances and hazards to public safety are investigated or noted, and officers are dispatched to individual calls for assistance within their district. During their shift, they may identify, pursue, and arrest suspected criminals, resolve problems within the community, and enforce traffic laws.

The U.S. Secret Service was created on July 5, 1865, as a federal bureau under the Department of Treasury. At that time, its main function and purpose was to suppress the counterfeiting of U. S. Currency. In 1901, the functions of the U.S. Secret Service were expanded to include the important responsibility of protecting the President of the United States. This responsibility has since been extended to:
  • Presidential immediate family.
  • Vice President and immediate family.
  • Former Presidents and spouses for life and their children until age 16.
  • Visiting heads of foreign States and Governments and spouses traveling with them.
  • Major Presidential and Vice Presidential candidates and spouses.
U.S. Secret Service investigative responsibilities also expanded. In addition to investigating counterfeiting, many more investigative areas were added. These included investigating financial crimes relating to banks, access devices (to include credit/debit cards), computers, telecommunications, and telemarketing. SPECIAL AGENTS
Special Agent positions are very competitive. The U.S. Secret Service is interested in all qualified applicants; however, availability of positions is limited because of high competition and a low attrition rate.
