BellaOnline's Computer Careers Editor Problem solving in Computer Careers When I started my first ‘Techie’ job, I really didn’t have all the skills necessary to succeed. Prior to being promoted to that position, I had worked for 3 years in the Marketing and Merchandising side of the company that I was with and I became an expert in using the software programs associated with those areas of the business. The natural course of direction from that position was to go into the Specialist group, the Technical/IT area or get promoted within the area. The IT group had more benefits, flexible schedules and had casual dress code every day so I saw jeans as a definite perk and my decision was made. No need to draw out a pros and cons list for me. It was more like closing my eyes and sticking a pin on a map to choose a summer vacation.
Soon after I began the new job, I found that I was in over my head. While I understood the user side of the applications that I was using, I wasn’t familiar with the technical side at all. Jargon and error codes sent me into my manager’s office by the end of the first week, puzzled by it all. He reassured me that I had all the right skills for the job, the main one being a will to learn and an interest in problem solving. That was the key, problem solving.

What is Computer Engineering about
Computer engineering is the designing and testing of computer components. The activities of those in computer engineering careers engage in activities that advance technology and provide new concepts. They then put those new concepts into physical form.
What is a Computer Engineer?
Computer engineers work with computer hardware and software. They solve technical problems, develop new products from initial idea conception through completion, and install computer systems. To do their job well, they rely on a broad mathematical and scientific knowledge base, as well as an ability to communicate complex ideas to clients and colleagues. Some computer engineers work solely with hardware or software.

http://asa.aip.org/acou_and_you.html
Acoustics and You
(A Career in Acoustics?)
Q:
What do all of these people have in common?
A:
Their work deals with ACOUSTICS. Acoustics is the science of sound. It relates to recorded music, to speech and hearing, to the behavior of sound in concert halls and buildings, and to noise in our environment. Sound waves are used in medical diagnosis, for testing critical materials, and for locating fish in the ocean or oil-bearing rock formations underground.
Q:
What career opportunities are available for me in ACOUSTICS?
A:
The field of ACOUSTICS, because it is so diverse, offers many different career opportunities. We have asked experts in several branches of acoustics to mention some of the opportunities that exist in their particular fields.
Architectural Acoustics
Architectural acoustics deals with sound in and around buildings of all kinds. Good acoustical design ensures the efficient distribution of desirable sounds as well as the exclusion of undesirable sound. It is the branch of acoustics that comes most readily to mind when a layperson thinks of "acoustics." Nearly everyone is aware of the importance of good acoustical design in concert halls, recording studios, auditoriums, and churches. But people spend more of their time in homes, offices, factories, or classrooms where little or no attention may have been given to the acoustical environment. Good acoustics should, and can, be engineered during the design of the building, since changes at a later time are expensive.

Computer Operators
Significant Points:
  • Computer operators usually receive on-the-job training; the length of training varies with the job and the experience of the worker. Employment is expected to decline sharply due to advances in technology. Opportunities will be best for operators who have formal computer-related education, are familiar with a variety of operating systems, and keep up-to-date with the latest technology.
Nature of the Work About this section To Top
Computer operators oversee the operation of computer hardware systems, ensuring that these machines are used as efficiently as possible. They may work with mainframes, minicomputers, or networks of personal computers. Computer operators must anticipate problems and take preventive action, as well as solve problems that occur during operations. The duties of computer operators vary with the size of the installation, the type of equipment used, and the policies of the employer. Generally, operators control the console of either a mainframe digital computer or a group of minicomputers. Working from operating instructions prepared by programmers, users, or operations managers, computer operators set controls on the computer and on peripheral devices required to run a particular job. Computer operators load equipment with tapes, disks, and paper, as needed. While the computer is running—which may be 24 hours a day for large computers—computer operators monitor the control console and respond to operating and computer messages. Messages indicate the individual specifications of each job being run. If an error message occurs, operators must locate and solve the problem or terminate the program. Operators also maintain logbooks or operating records, listing each job that is run and events, such as machine malfunctions, that occur during their shift. In addition, computer operators may help programmers and systems analysts test and debug new programs.

Computer Programmers
Significant Points:
  • Nearly half of all computer programmers held a bachelor’s degree in 2002; about 1 in 5 held a graduate degree. Employment is expected to grow much more slowly than that of other computer specialists. Prospects should be best for college graduates with knowledge of a variety of programming languages and tools; those with less formal education or its equivalent in work experience should face strong competition for programming jobs.
Nature of the Work About this section To Top
Computer programmers write, test, and maintain the detailed instructions, called programs, that computers must follow to perform their functions. They also conceive, design, and test logical structures for solving problems by computer. Many technical innovations in programming—advanced computing technologies and sophisticated new languages and programming tools—have redefined the role of a programmer and elevated much of the programming work done today. Job titles and descriptions may vary, depending on the organization. In this occupational statement, computer programmer refers to individuals whose main job function is programming; this group has a wide range of responsibilities and educational backgrounds. Computer programs tell the computer what to do—which information to identify and access, how to process it, and what equipment to use. Programs vary widely depending upon the type of information to be accessed or generated. For example, the instructions involved in updating financial records are very different from those required to duplicate conditions on board an aircraft for pilots training in a flight simulator. Although simple programs can be written in a few hours, programs that use complex mathematical formulas, whose solutions can only be approximated, or that draw data from many existing systems may require more than a year of work. In most cases, several programmers work together as a team under a senior programmer’s supervision.

Computer Programmers
  • Nature of the Work Computer programmers write, and maintain the detailed instructions-called "programs" or "software"-that list in a logical order the steps that computers must execute to perform their functions. In many large organizations, programmers follow descriptions prepared by systems analysts who have carefully studied the task that the computer system is going to perform. These descriptions list the input required, the steps the computer must follow to process data, and the desired arrangement of the output. (A more detailed description of the work of systems analysts is presented in the statement on computer scientists and systems analysts elsewhere in the Handbook .) Some organizations, particularly smaller ones, do not employ systems analysts. Instead, workers called programmer-analysts are responsible for both systems analysis and programming. Regardless of setting, programmers write specific programs by breaking down each step into a logical series of instructions the computer can follow. They then code these instructions in a conventional programming language, such as C and FORTRAN, or one of the more advanced artificial intelligence or object oriented languages, such as LISP, Prolog, C++, or Ada. The transition from a mainframe environment to primarily a PC-based environment has blurred the once rigid distinction between the programmer and the user. Increasingly adept users are taking over many of the tasks previously performed by programmers. For example, the growing use of packaged software, like spreadsheet and data base management software packages, allows users to write simple programs to access data and perform calculations.
