(An adapted version of an article published in Landscape Design in 1997) Conceptual clarification Landscape Developer Landscape Planner Greenway Initiator ... Tourism Planner There are some wonderful jobs in landscape architecture - and some dull jobs. The disillusioned say ‘Its hard to find work; if you do find it, you may not be paid; if you are paid, you'll be sued for negligence’. Yet the prospects for the art of landscape design are utterly stupendous. The dust jacket of the Jellicoes’ Landscape of man rightly proclaims: The world is moving into a phase when landscape design may well be recognised as the most comprehensive of the arts. Man creates around him an environment that is a projection into nature of his abstract ideas. It is only in the present century that the collective landscape has emerged as a social necessity. We are promoting a landscape art on a scale never conceived of in history. So how can we move from the ridiculous to the sublime? I see two requirements: we should be clear in our minds about the nature of the art that we profess and we should open our minds to the many ways in which the art may be practised. In both cases, action must come from within. It is inaccurate and altogether fruitless to lay the blame for our predicament on unimaginative clients, an uncomprehending public or the rapacious practitioners of related professions.

We crave beautiful landscapes...the kind of exquisite, balanced, varied design that is Nature. When we carve out of natural landscapes places for us to live, work, drive and play well, we miss the original beauty. So it is with a great sense of rightness and harmony that we strive to recreate in our cities and towns a pretty landscape, blending rocks, water and plants of all colors, sizes and kinds. And it's not just an issue of "pretty"; creative landscaping can enhance emotional and physical health, preserve ecological and biological diversity, and help mitigate the harmful effects of global climate changes.

    Overview
Horticulture is a broad and diverse field involved with producing and utilizing a multitude of specialized plants. Benefits of this industry to all people are both physical and emotional. Horticulturists provide the fruits and vegetables so important to good nutrition. Horticulturists also improve the human environment, through both beautification and conservation, by providing the ornamental plants and designs utilized to enhance aesthetics within and around the home, workplace, and other areas. Thus, while the field is based on a biological and agricultural science foundation, there is ample opportunity for individuals also oriented toward business, social science, art, education, and international development. The horticulture curriculum is fully individualized in consultation with a course advisor. Following the freshman year of core courses, students begin their personal programs of study in one of four options.

Horticulture is the science of growing flowers, trees, shrubs, and other plants in gardens, orchards, forests, nurseries, and greenhouses. A nursery is a place where plants are raised for sale, transplanting, testing and research. NURSERY WORKERS help to conserve natural resources and make the environment beautiful. They plant, tend, fertilize, and sometimes harvest flowers, shrubs, and other plants. They work indoors in greenhouses and water gardens, as well as outdoors in parks, private and public gardens, flower farms, and fruit orchards. Horticultural workers in nurseries are involved in the growing and selling of flowers and plants. Recording the growth of plants is an important part of the job. They must also know how to grow, transplant, feed, protect, store, prune, and handle plants for the best results. Other horticultural workers plant, prune, feed, and provide pest control for trees. Others help to plant and grow turf grass and help to keep up grounds and landscaping. These workers may help grow sod for sale, help sell seeds, fertilizers, and insect killers needed by every type of grower.
