Horticulture is the science of growing flowers, trees, shrubs, and other plants in gardens, orchards, forests, nurseries, and greenhouses. A nursery is a place where plants are raised for sale, transplanting elsewhere, testing and research. Nursery workers help to conserve natural resources and beautify the environment. They plant, tend, fertilize, and sometimes harvest flowers, shrubs, and other plant life. They work indoors in greenhouses and hydroponics gardens, as well as outdoors in parks, estates, public gardens, flower farms, and fruit orchards. Other horticultural workers plant, prune, feed, and provide pest control for trees. Still others help to plant and grow turf grass and help to maintain grounds and landscapes. Some workers specialize in planting, cultivating, and harvesting flowering bulbs and flowers (Farmworker, Bulbs) while others may harvest and bundle flowers as members of work crews (Flower Pickers). Nursery workers may also be identified by where they work as Greenhouse Worker or by crop specialty or technique as Bean-Sprout Laborer, Hydroponics Worker. California is the leading state in the production and use of ornamental plants in landscape projects and floral designing.

    Landscape Architecture
The sustainable development of our environment is the most important task in safeguarding the living conditions of later generations. The safeguarding and management of soil, water, air, animal and plant world are, therefore, the central areas of concern for the society in the coming decades. The management of the environment can not be carried out by landscape architects alone. They, however, make essential contributions in the spatial design and planning of particular projects. A course of study in landscape architecture aims at a balanced integration of specialized knowledge from the fields of ecology and natural sciences, the skills of creativity and design, and the engineering-related skills for the implementation of plans (technical, normative, economical). Studies in landscape architecture impart both specialist knowledge (e.g. soil science, vegetation science, plant utilization, landscaping, garden design/sculpture) and engineering-related skills necessary for the implementation of planning (e.g. electronic data processing applications, landscape engineering, handling construction work) as well as aspects of design and creativity (e.g. plan representation, design and graphic skills).
