The challenge for today's agriculture is to provide the world with food and fiber while protecting the environment. Students develop skills needed for professional careers in crop production, plant maintenance, pest control, biotechnology, biological control of insects, weeds and diseases, and preservation of soil, water, and air quality. The Department of Plant, Soil and Entomological Sciences, within the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, consists of four divisions which include: Entomology Crop and Weed Science Horticultural Science , and Soil and Land Resources . The department offers B.S. degrees in entomology plant science , and soil and land resources The Entomology major emphasizes both basic and applied aspects of the study of insects and how they influence human activities. The program provides a broad entomological education with opportunities to specialize in such areas as agricultural and aquatic entomology, biological control, host plant resistance, insect ecology, physiology, and insect-plant relations. The curriculum is designed for students pursuing professional careers in the basic and applied fields of entomology, or for those interested in continuing their education at the graduate level.

First Published on EnvironmentalPrograms.net - October 15, 2003 Horticulture Academic Requirements Careers Salary Forecast ... Resources HORTICULTURE Horticulture is an intensive subset of agriculture that deals with flowers, landscape plants, vegetables, and fruits. Today, horticulture is focused on finding new and environmentally-responsible ways of managing plants and pests to help increase crop and ornamental plant viability. Sam Houston State University sums it up as a science, "dealing with production and management of plants for food, comfort, feed, recreation, and beauty." Plants are also very important in environmental protection. They are used to re-vegetate and restore land disturbed by human or natural activities, they control erosion, and they help to clean the air and water. Plants also have an important role in the beautification of urban and rural landscapes and recreation areas. Horticulture is socially important because it improves how we use plants, for food and other human purposes, as well as repairing the environment and personal aesthetics.

Beyond general plant science and horticulture focus might be in a commodity area (e.g. fruit or vegetable or landscape) or in a disciplinary area (e.g. ecology or physiology or genetics or business management or landscape design). Additional courses chosen often strengthen student understanding in one or more of the four themes around which Cornell’s horticulture programs are organized. Courses to consider for specialization within horticulture are listed in the Appendix. In addition courses are recommended in other aspects of horticulture, business management (see Horticultural Business Management Careers section), and languages such as Spanish. Fruit Crops: PomologyViticulture Careers
Pomology is the science of growing and marketing fruit crops. It is one of the few modern scientific disciplines named after a goddess-Pomona-the deity of fruit and good harvests in ancient Rome. Cornell is one of several universities in the country that offers a specialized degree in this field, which includes the cultivation of orchard fruits and nuts, as well as wine, juice and table grapes (viticulture), and brambles and berry crops. Graduates of the pomology program find work in a variety of professions that require expertise in fruit production systems.

    Career Guide - Landscape Architect
    THE WORK
Changes IN our environment must be planned, designed and managed in responsible, efficient and economic ways to achieve a wide range of objectives.  At all stages, scientific and technological knowledge as well as design experience needs to be used to maximum advantage.  These three inter-related areas of interest and expertise are the concern of the landscape professional. A landscape architect is above all a designer: one who designs in the ever changing environment, and sees those designs implemented.  In urban areas the work is mainly concerned with the integration of the layout of housing areas, roadworks, parks and play areas, with public and private gardens, and with general urban regeneration.  In rural areas the emphasis is on agriculture, forest and tourist landscapes, on roads and the settings of power stations and other industrial buildings, on land reclamation and on the landscape impact of the extraction industries. The work is varied in type, scale and geographic range, and in the proportion of time spent in office or on site at home and abroad.  It calls for an awareness of the total environment, ranging from city centres and their surroundings to countryside or even wilderness; it is not confined by local or national boundaries. Individual projects can vary from small gardens or town spaces to regional planning and can offer the opportunity to influence the direction which the development and expansion of human interest is taking.  The landscape professional does not normally work in isolation, and is very often part of a team which may be composed of architects, planners, civil engineers and sometimes politicians.  The ability to communicate in a lucid and convincing manner is therefore most important.
