  • California and New York together account for about 1 in 5 firms and more than 1 in 4 workers in the industry. Competition for many jobs will be keen because the glamour of the industry traditionally attracts many more jobseekers than there are job openings. Layoffs are common when accounts are lost, major clients cut budgets, or agencies merge.

Nature of the Industry About this section Back to Top There are 47,000 advertising and public relations services establishments in the United States. About 4 out of 10 write copy and prepare artwork, graphics, and other creative work, and then place the resulting ads on television, radio, or the Internet or in periodicals, newspapers, or other advertising media. Within the industry, only these full-service establishments are known as advertising agencies . Almost 1 in 5 are public relations firms. Many of the largest agencies are international, with a substantial proportion of their revenue coming from abroad.

In a small firm, managers may serve as a liaison between the firm and the advertising or promotion agency to which many advertising or promotional functions are contracted out. In larger firms, advertising managers oversee in-house account, creative, and media services departments. The account executive manages the account services department, assesses the need for advertising, and, in advertising agencies, maintains the accounts of clients. The creative services department develops the subject matter and presentation of advertising. The creative director oversees the copy chief, art director, and associated staff. The media director oversees planning groups that select the communication media—for example, radio, television, newspapers, magazines, Internet, or outdoor signs—to disseminate the advertising.

Network Into Marketing, Advertising, and Public Relations Careers
Besides taking classes in marketing, advertising, or public relations, what have you done to prepare yourself for a successful transition from student to professional? According to Ginny Shipe, director of professional development and member services for the American Marketing Association (AMA), it’s best to start early on career plans, but you can take steps as a junior or senior to become a professional before you collect your diploma. Network and learn How can you become a professional when you devote most of your time to classes? One step that can take you far is joining relevant professional societies. Many professional organizations have student chapters that offer career-oriented activities and give you opportunities to meet experienced professionals. The Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) and student chapters of the American Advertising Federation (AAF) and the AMA are three examples of groups you can join at any time during your education. Most offer internship and mentoring programs and competitions that help you learn about the field and build your portfolio while you’re still in school. Richard George, director of public relations, Public Relations Society of America (PRSA), emphasizes that internships are “almost mandatory” to get entry-level jobs because there are so many qualified college graduates who want PR jobs. PRSSA sponsors scholarship and internship programs and a case study competition each year.

Career: Advertising, Marketing, and Public Relations Managers
Northwestern University Library Marketing managers draw on market research to target the right audience; advertising managers are in charge of creating and placing ads; and public relations managers use subtler methods to get the word out. Of course, the roles of these professionals overlap, and their goal is the same: to earn bigger profits. With tools such as advertisements, brochures, and websites, they can make the difference between a success and a flop. Advertising, marketing, and public relations managers use market research and employ various strategies to develop, promote, and sell their clients' products and services.
