Think about potential employers, think about how your skills and knowledge can enhance an organization. If you can't think of occupations that can use people schooled in the arts and humanities, then go over to Before You Search and check out our information on Exploring Career Options I have a degree in Music (Performance) from the Boston Conservatory . After graduation, I worked as a library paraprofessional while freelancing. Some organizations actually preferred to hire musicians for administrative duties, citing their ability to concentrate on fine detail work for long periods without fatigue. I also worked as an orchestra librarian before moving into library sciences and obtaining my MLS degree. I still play, I could still freelance if I wanted, but I never sweat public presentations because public speaking is much easier than playing the horn in performance.

Museum Careers The Smithsonian, with over six thousand people at facilities in six states, the District of Columbia and the Republic of Panama requires a variety of skills to support our goals. Secretary Small's vision for the Smithsonian includes
- Seeking to extend the uniquely powerful contribution science has made to the development of the United States, the Smithsonian is committed to promoting scientific innovation and discovery by operating the country's premier centers for astrophysics, biodiversity research, and a select number of specialized fields in the life and earth sciences.' All of our employees, working together and in support of these goals, contribute to the success of the Smithsonian. Many large organizations or even small towns may require many of the same skills as the Smithsonian. The difference is that many of our people work in very special and one of a kind places. Our museums contain the nation's treasures and our research facilities expand out the frontiers of knowledge. There are also a variety of positions that are unique to the museum world.
