Guidance Services and Career Counseling
Academic, occupational and personal counseling services are offered to all St. John’s students by the Guidance Department. Students are interviewed on a regular basis during the year and are encouraged to initiate counseling sessions themselves whenever they believe it necessary. The Guidance Department aids students in course selection that will best meet their individual needs and their future educational or career objectives. They are informed about the Advanced Placement and the International Baccalaureate Programs in interviews with the coordinators of these programs. The Guidance Counselor, in conjunction with the Director of Support Services, helps facilitate tutoring in various subjects when needed and especially in English as an Additional Language for those who are not native English speakers. Close contact is maintained with curriculum coordinators, team facilitators, advisors, and community resource people, so that coordinated efforts can be made to assist students. Career counseling is given great emphasis especially in grades eleven and twelve. The department has an extensive program in college and university counseling that meets the needs of most national groups. Great care is taken that all important external tests are made available to the students. Among the more important tests are the following:

In order to support this mission, the WJC school division is committed to a K-12 comprehensive guidance program based on student, school, and community needs. The WJC guidance and counseling program recognizes that every student needs strong academic, career, and social skills to benefit from the educational program. The division's guidance program is designed to enhance students' skills in these three areas. Guidance curriculum, individual planning, responsive services, and system support activities provide the framework for the K-12 guidance program. Twenty three certified professional school counselors are responsible for implementing the division's guidance and counseling program with the support of the school community.

The article's 1st section provides an overview of the historical development of career counseling in the Philippines from an economic-political perspective. The 2nd section raises current challenges and concerns, highlighting the need for a career counseling model that would address, among other things, Filipinos' valued characteristics of close family ties and desire for economic progress. Like many other aspects of Filipino life, the development of psychology and guidance in the Philippines bears heavy traces of U.S. influence. This is probably the result of years under U.S. colonial rule, with English as the medium of instruction facilitating the "Americanization" of the Filipinos. The development of career counseling, in particular, just like its U.S. counterpart, is interwoven with the growth of psychology and the guidance movement in the schools.

As the 21st Century unfolds, the United States continues to undergo substantial changes in its occupational, social, and economic structures. Occupational and industrial specialization continues to increase dramatically. Increasing company size and complexity is the rule rather than the exception. This often creates job invisibility and makes the transition from school to work, and from work to further education and back to work again, more complex and difficult. Social structures and social and personal values also continue to change and become more diverse. Emerging social groups are challenging established groups, asking for equality. People are on the move too, from rural to urban areas and vice versa, and from one region of the country to another in search of economic, social, and psychological security. The United States is becoming increasingly diverse.

Georgia's Comprehensive Guidance and Counseling Curriculum: A Framework for Developing and Implementing Asset Building Standards
Preface
"A Framework For Asset Building Standards in a Guidance and Counseling Curriculum" is the culmination of a work collaboration of guidance counselors, guidance supervisors, and teachers. The framework is a comprehensive developmental guidance model, which has as its philosophy developing student abilities, and internal and external assets. It has been refined through two intensive Summer Institutes for school counselors, and work meetings. Everyone involved was committed to the idea of changing the way things are done to how they should be done in order to do what is best for the students of Georgia.
The Guidance Framework is designed to provide a basic model for a structure for schools and systems to adapt to fit their needs and purposes, as well as to assist counselors in developing standards and competencies to use in maximizing students' assets and abilities.
The Framework is divided into three sections:
  • The curriculum itself with the appropriate grade level standards and competencies.
