Contents of this page: Alternative names Rescue breathing and chest compressions - infant; Resuscitation - cardiopulmonary - infant; Cardiopulmonary resuscitation - infant Definition Return to top CPR is a lifesaving procedure that is performed when an infant's breathing or heartbeat has stopped, as in cases of drowning, suffocation, choking, or injuries. CPR is a combination of:
  • Rescue breathing, which provides oxygen to the infant's lungs Chest compressions, which keep the infant's blood circulating.
Permanent brain damage or death can occur within minutes if a infant's blood flow stops. Therefore, you must continue these procedures until the infant's heartbeat and breathing return, or trained medical help arrives. Considerations Return to top CPR can be lifesaving, but it is best performed by those who have been trained in an accredited CPR course. The procedures described here are not a substitute for CPR training. All parents and those who take care of children should learn infant and child CPR if they haven't already. This jewel of knowledge is something no parent should be without. (See

DEFINE: CPR
C ardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) consists of mouth-to-mouth respiration and chest compression. CPR allows oxygenated blood to circulate to vital organs such as the brain and heart. CPR can keep a person alive until more advanced procedures (such as defibrillation - an electric shock to the chest) can treat the cardiac arrest. CPR started by a bystander doubles the likelihood of survival for victims of cardiac arrest. RETURN TO MAIN PAGE

KNOW WHAT TO DO:
CPR
CARDIOPULMONARY RESUSCITATION
IT CAN BE AS EASY AS A- B- C:
A - AIRWAY
  • Place victim flat on his/her back on a hard surface.
  • Shake victim at the shoulders and shout "are you okay?"
  • If no response, call emergency medical system - then
  • Head-tilt/chin-lift - open victims' airway by tilting their head back with one hand while lifting up their chin with your other hand.
B - BREATHING
  • Position your cheek close to victims' nose and mouth, look toward victims' chest, and
  • Look, listen, and feel for breathing (5-10 seconds)
  • If not breathing, pinch victim's nose closed and give 2 full breaths into victim's mouth (use microshield).
  • If breaths won't go in, reposition head and try again to give breaths. If still blocked, perform abdominal thrusts (Heimlich maneuver)
C - CIRCULATION
  • Check for carotid pulse by feeling for 5-10 seconds at side of victims' neck.
  • If there is a pulse but victim is not breathing, give Rescue breathing at rate of 1 breath every 5 seconds Or 12 breaths per minute
  • If there is no pulse , begin chest compressions as follows:
  • Place heel of one hand on lower part of victim's sternum. With your other hand directly on top of first hand, Depress sternum 1.5 to 2 inches.

NRCPR Mission
To provide an efficient and consistent means for hospitals to effectively collect and analyze resuscitation data, thereby equipping them to evaluate equipment, resources, and training, improve practices, and ultimately save lives!
NRCPR Includes Medical Emergency Teams (MET) in v5!
The NRCPR is very pleased to announce its plans to support data collection and quality improvement for Medical Emergency Team programs by providing an integrated MET component in v5.0 to be released in January 2006. The goal of the MET (also referred to as Rapid Response Systems or Rapid Response Teams) is to identify and provide early intervention for medical conditions that are often present prior to a cardiac arrest, with the goal of decreased morbidity and mortality for hospitalized patients. For more information on Medical Emergency Teams visit the MET page . Additionally
