There are no auditions. In every cabaret, at least one of the performers will be new to public performance

We carefully choose the array of artists and art forms so that every show offers both the artists and the audience a diverse range of performances. The entire door, 100%, goes to the artists performing that night. Every year before an average audience of 3000, approximately 450-550 artists cross our stage. Some are veterans, some are new, but all find the Cabaret experience to be one that encourages art and builds community. Cabaret Performances January 2005

Nego Gato for his acrobatic springs and jumps. Mestre Gato performed throughout Brazil, Latin America and Europe with groups Tenda dos Milagres and Viva Bahia. As his reputation grew so did his travel and he soon found himself teaching and performing throughout the United States. Mestre Gato believes that it was only because his ancestors left for him these cultural treasures that he did not succumb to the dangers of the streets of Salvador, Brazil. Because of Gato's history our mission is to empower the African community throughout the diaspora while enriching the world community. We do this through the performance and instruction of the arts of Bahia, Brazil. Our performances are designed to share the beauty, variety and dynamic power of Afro-Brazilian culture. He continues to perform with his band the Nego Gato Music and Dance ensemble in venues such as The Kennedy Center with such artists as Oludum and Daniella Mercury. You can hear him on his CD entitled Baino in New York and we invite you to attend his ongoing performances and events The second component of our mission is fulfilled with programs of arts-empowerment.

Therefore, my perspective on the martial/performance issue is that of a working professional fight director with an extensive background in the martial arts (both sportive and combat-oriented), with a sincere interest in the work of HACA and similar organizations. As such, I am in regular contact with representatives of the martial arts, stage combat, historical fencing and role-playing communities. I have encountered a series of four basic points of contention that arise when specialists in any of these activities attempt to draw comparisons between their own field and the others. Nurturing physical performance skills in our students has always been integral to the AcroSports mission. Students have been a part of every performance ever produced by AcroSports, from the early days of the City Circus productions until today. The year 2000 saw a major shift in those productions, when students graduated from bit players to full headliners in their own right, and the AcroSports City Circus performance troupe was born. Composed of a group of highly skilled, fiercely dedicated students, the troupe has performed at the Dell 'Arte's Summer Institute of Physical Theatre and Humboldt State University, San Francisco Zoo's ZooFest For Kids, the Yerba Buena Ice Skating Center's Holiday productions, as well as numerous other events around the Bay Area.
City Circus performers have graduated to become performers with such prestigious companies as Cirque Ingenieux, Tokyo Disney, and Cirque du Soleil. Today the performance program includes the City Circus Troupe and training program which is designed to prepare our advanced performers for professional careers, and the Recital Classes which help intermediate to advanced level students begin their performance training.

Recital students follow a progressive curriculum that combines skill and choreography to help them prepare for performing or entrance into the City Circus Troupe. All recital students are required to take 4 hours of recital classes per week: 2 hours of ensemble theatrical and acrobatic training, and 2 hours of specialized training in a chosen focus discipline. Each session culminates in a public recital performance.

Backstage Whispers overheard by Richard Andrews

April de Angelis's bawdy comedy Playhouse Creatures , which tells the backstage story of the first female performers on the Restoration stage (including Nell Gwynne) who had to walk the fine line between fame and infamy, is in repertoire at the Theatre By The Lake in Keswick until 4th November. The company comprises Pamela Buchner, Janet Jefferies, Elizabeth Marsh, Vivienne Rowdon and Anna Stranak, directed by Stefan Escreet.
The National Theatre has broken its attendance record in the 2004/2005 season, playing to 94% capacity, amounting to nearly 800,000 people, 58,000 of them first time visitors. During the year ending in March, the company mounted 17 new main house productions and won 22 major awards. Financially, the National also experienced one of its most successful years ever, with an operating surplus of £674,000. Its Arts Council grant for 2004/2005 was nearly £15.9m, box office income £13.1m and other self-generated income £11.4m. This is partly due to the extended runs of Alan Bennett's The History Boys , which will probably be the most successful play in the theatre's history, and the second season of Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials . This golden scenario is unlikely to be repeated however, as productions in the current year have been both less well received critically and less well attended.

    Encyclopedia: Capoeira
Updated 6 days 17 hours 3 minutes ago. Other descriptions of Capoeira Capoeira or the Dance of War by Johann Moritz Rugendas, 1835 Capoeira is an Afro Brazilian martial art developed initially by African slaves in Brazil, starting in the colonial period . It is marked by deft, tricky movements often played on the ground or completely inverted. It also has a strong acrobatic component in some versions and is always played with music. The word capoeira has a few meanings, one of which is an area of forest or jungle that has been cleared by burning or cutting down. Alternatively, Kongo scholar K. Kia Bunseki Fu-Kiau thinks that capoeira could be a deformation of the Kikongo word kipura , which means to flutter, to flit from place to place; to struggle, to fight, to flog. In particular, the term is used to describe rooster's movements in a fight.
