M.O.V.E. Make Our Voices Empowered MOVE is a forum of arts education for personal success. MOVE provides tools to motivate, inspire, and assist youth in developing artistic expression and personal empowerment. Together, we move through our personal, social, and global obstacles in creative ways. Mission Statement: MOVE is an arts education program that presents youth with creative alternatives to self-exploration, self-expression, and empowerment. Our core curriculum allows youth to develop an inquiry into themselves, their personal and cultural history and their dialogue with the world. The program provides education and training in a variety of visual and performing arts, drawing on ancient traditions and contemporary forms. MOVE provides supplemental education for schools in Santa Cruz County through an after school program, special weekend workshops, and day classes. Its programs seek to bring together youth from various social, economic, and cultural backgrounds and aim to provide scholarships for all low-income students who wish to participate. MOVE is comprised of a collective of educated and qualified artists, dancers, musicians and teachers. Each has extensive experience in their field and is currently working with their art in our local community. In addition to being skilled artists, they are skilled in working with youth of diverse ages and backgrounds. Together they are creating a unique program for personal development and empowerment through arts education.

DanceBrazil Brings High Energy Feats to MASS MoCA October 12 and 13
(North Adams, Mass.) Jack Anderson of The New York Times termed DanceBrazil's recent performance at the Joyce Theater as "an uninhibited celebration." Now this troupe of daring dancers and accomplished musicians comes to MASS MoCA for two performances, Saturday, October 12 at 8:00 P.M. and Sunday, October 13 at 2:00 P.M. The unique choreography of DanceBrazil blends Afro-Brazilian dance and music traditions such as capoeira (a lively dance-martial art form) and samba with modern dance drawing upon links between these two distinct cultural phenomena. Rather than including capoeira moves as isolated stunts, Jelon Vieira, DanceBrazil's artistic director, weaves the steps into the overall choreographic texture. The Times suggests he is developing a new Brazilian contemporary dance style. Co-presented with Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival, at MASS MoCA DanceBrazil will perform "Canavial" ("Sugar Cane Fields") and "A Jornada" ("The Path"). Vieira explains that the first piece was inspired by memories of the sugar cane factory his father once managed. In the later, the dancers rise out of darkness into the light of day (and by implication freedom) with tumbling and acrobatic movements. In addition to stunning dance, DanceBrazil's performance features original music performed live. For "A Jornada" Marcelo Zarvos's score contrasts melodies for strings with chiming and rattling percussion. "Canavial's" percussive score is by TotŽ Gira.

Our Students East Bay Center students have distinguished themselves in countless ways. They have played integral roles in the creation of award-winning productions; they have engaged themselves personally and creatively in projects that have benefitted the community; they have performed in local festivals and events throughout the community; they have devoted hours to mentoring new students; they have gone on to assume positions of responsibility in the life of the community, and some have gone on to start their own arts organizations.. Whether they come to the Center as new learners or advanced students,we encourage them to take full advantage of the many different opportunities available to them, and they continually amaze us with what they have accomplished. There is no single profile of an East Bay Center student. They come from all backgrounds, ages and skill levels. Their reasons for studying with are just as varied as they are. Urban Tap: Caravane
US Tour: 2002-2003 Tap dancing wonder Herbin "Tamango" Van Cayseele from French Guiana tours his dynamic and wildly entertaining Urban Tap dance show Caravane across the USA this year. Tamango was born in Cayenne, French Guiana, a young man with an artistic bent who dreamed of becoming a painter. It was in Paris that he was first inspired by a tap dancing street performer. Tamango learned to dance at the American Centre in Paris with American teacher Sarah Petronio, then worked with a street band. After he moved to New York, he busked the ferries, tapping, drumming and singing. He briefly joined Riverdance, then set out to create his own style of tapping, which was influenced by African-American reviews like Stormy Weather and stars like Gregory Hines and Buster Brown. In the last few years Tamango has emerged as both an astonishing dance star and an imaginative impresario. The New York Times recently raved, "Tamango is an astonishingly fluid performer, always loose with swiveling hips, rubbery legs and a mobile torso but still brilliantly sharp in the crystal clear virtuosity of his complex tapping. To say he is light on his feet would be to deny the staccato impulses of his articulate rhythms. Yet typically, his feet skim the floor with amazing speed."

Capoeira Angola Workshop
African-Brazilian Martial Arts

Capoeira Angola is a dance fight, a playful sparring involving style, wit, flexibility and strategy. Capoeira weaves intricate movements, spirituality, mental and physical discipline, fight, and philosophy into a unique "game". As an African-Brazilian art form, capoeira has roots in the Bantu tradition and was used by enslaved Africans to combat the colonial oppression of the Portuguese rulers. Its practitioners used this powerful weapon of resistance during revolts and in defense of the Quilombos, communities/nations of formally enslaved Africans who organized according to African cultural forms. Hundreds of years old, capoeira was trained in secrecy for much of its history and was illegal to practice or teach until the late 1930s—almost fifty years after the abolition of slavery in Brazil. Capoeira Angola has remained very rhythmic and ritualistic, and like many other African based traditions, is still orally transmitted from master to student. The jogo-de-capoeira (play of capoeira) is the ritual activity that takes place in a circular area called a roda (wheel, circle, social group), pronounced “ho-da.” The
