By Anthony Gonzales One of the main arguments used by the antireligious bigots against the "Radical Right" (those people who hold to the values of our ancestors) is that our position is inconsistent because we "claim" to be pro-life and at the same time support the death penalty. This liberal mantra has also been adopted by liberals in the Church who have attempted to take the teeth out of the pro-life movement by saying that we as Catholics must support the "Seamless Garment" concept that all human life is sacred no matter what the circumstances. They them- selves claim that it is inconsistent to be pro-capital punishment if you claim to be pro-life. Finally, to make matters worse for conservative Catholics, giving more ammunition to the liberals, is the position Pope John Paul II and Mother Teresa have taken in regards to the death penalty. In several instances they both have interceded with the governors of their respective states for criminals who were about to be executed. Arguments For and Against the Death Penalty Abstract Despite capital punishment having been abolished in Canada 20 years ago, the majority of Canadians continue to favour the death penalty as a sentencing option. In this study, a 2 x 6 design was employed to investigate the effects that argument position (for or against the death penalty) and type of justification for punishment (deterrence, morality, rehabilitation, incapacitation, economic, and possibility of mistake) have on participants' sentence recommendations for a defendant found guilty of first degree murder. Results indicated that only those arguments in favour of the death penalty, based on retribution, economics, and impossibility of mistake, were effective in influencing participants to recommend that the accused be sentenced to death. Compared to participants who recommended a life sentence, those who recommended the death penalty were found to have significantly higher scores on a measure of vengeance. A lthough the Parliament of Canada abolished the death penalty as a sentencing option in 1976 (Amnesty International, 1987), a majority of Canadians (approximately 65-75%) have indicated that they would support a return of the death penalty (Reid, 1987). Furthermore, calls for the reintroduction of the death penalty by politicians and others occur frequently. It has undergone numerous changes and reforms in the past two centuries, falling in and out of public favor. Immediately after the American Revolution, some legislators removed the death penalty as punishment for many crimes. In the genteel nineteenth century, government officials went even further, ending public hangings that once entertained large crowds of curious onlookers. Officials deemed it more seemly to conduct executions in prisons, away from public scrutiny. In the 1840s reformers called for the elimination of the death penalty. In 1846, the Michigan legislature made that state the first government in the world to remove the death penalty altogether. Historian Louis Masur has argued in that the death penalty might well have ended in the whole nation if the Civil War, and the brutalizing of society that it engendered, had been averted. Other reforms have influenced the methods of putting prisoners to death. With the advent of electricity at the close of the nineteenth century, the electric chair was introduced as a more humane alternative to hanging. Recently, with similar motivation, many states have adopted the practice of lethal injection, where a deadly chemical is delivered intravenously. Lethal injection is seen as less stressful to the prisoner and the witnesses than the electric chair.
