    Culture*Park offers Cape Verde dance
Culture*Park and the Cabo Dance Project have joined collaborative forces to present a dance workshop to be offered April 3 to May 11 at New Bedford's Unitarian Universalist Church. The workshop series will end with a free and informal public presentation.
The Cabo Dance Project Dancers' Workshop is a six-week program designed to educate new performers about Cape Verdean traditional and contemporary dance. It will be taught by professional Cape Verdean dance artists.
"This is such a creative way to investigate the Cape Verdean culture ingrained in the SouthCoast area," says Rebecca Schade, cofounder of Culture*Park. "Dance is a universal language, and one often overlooked in favor of visual arts. As a performance collaborative, we're especially pleased to have this opportunity, and fortunate to have instructors with such high-caliber teaching credentials and performance experience."
Techniques of contact improvisation, fusion choreography, and traditional Cape Verdean dance will be developed in this workshop as a means to explore Cape Verdean culture. Instructors include Djeca Oliveira, Neusa Mendes, and Zezinho Semado, each of who have extensive performance experience in both Cape Verde and Portugal, as well as other international venues.
For further information about the Cabo Dance Project/Dancers' Workshop, call Culture*Park for time schedule, registration fees, or further information at (508) 996-0122, ext. 1.

At the cross-road of the three continents that border the Atlantic, there is an obligatory stop in the middle of the ocean, the Archipelago of Cabo Verde. Located 450 km off the coast of Senegal, it is composed of 10 islands and 8 islets. Of volcanic origin and positioned between parallels 15 and 17 of the North latitude, Cape Verde is made up of two distinctly different types of islands. Its six inhabited islands, located more to the West, are characterised by their mountainous landscapes, whereas the remaining three are distinguished by their long sandy beaches. The islands are divided into two groups named according to the trade windsthat reach them from the African Continent: windward and leeward.
The first group consists of the islands of Santo Antão S.Vicente , Santa Luzia (disabitata), S.Nicolau Sal Boavista , and the second, more to theSouth, comprises the islands of Maio Santiago Fogo and Brava . The sun spreads its warmth the whole year round, soothed by the fresh seabreeze. The climate is tropical and dry.The average temperature is approximately 25°C and changes do not exceed10°C.

Bookmark this page Cape Verde: Overview The uninhabited islands were discovered and colonized by the Portuguese in the 15th century; Cape Verde subsequently became a trading center for African slaves and later an important coaling and resupply stop for whaling and transatlantic shipping. Following independence in 1975, and a tentative interest in unification with Guinea-Bissau, a one-party system was established and maintained until multi-party elections were held in 1990. Cape Verde continues to exhibit one of Africa's most stable democratic governments. Repeated droughts during the second half of the 20th century caused significant hardship and prompted heavy emigration. As a result, Cape Verde's expatriate population is greater than its domestic one. Most Cape Verdeans have both African and Portuguese antecedents. This island economy suffers from a poor natural resource base, including serious water shortages exacerbated by cycles of long-term drought. The economy is service-oriented, with commerce, transport, tourism, and public services accounting for 72% of GDP. Although nearly 70% of the population lives in rural areas, the share of agriculture in GDP in 2001 was only 11%, of which fishing accounted for 1.5%. About 82% of food must be imported. The fishing potential, mostly lobster and tuna, is not fully exploited. Cape Verde annually runs a high trade deficit, financed by foreign aid and remittances from emigrants; remittances supplement GDP by more than 20%. Economic reforms are aimed at developing the private sector and attracting foreign investment to diversify the economy. Prospects for 2004 depend heavily on the maintenance of aid flows, tourism, remittances, and the momentum of the government's development program.

Miscegenation between the early white setllers and the African slaves forged a distinct mestico Cape Verdean nationality, with its own highly individual culture and language.Portuguese is the official language, but crioulo (derived from west African languages and archaic portuguese) is the mother tongue of all Cape Verdeans. Christian Roman Catholic is the predominant religion with (97%) followers. In the years between 1747 and 1970, the islands suffered over half a century of drought and famine in which about 250,000 people died. Almost no relief was sent by the Portuguese government to the victims of these faminies until the most recent and longest which began in 1969. The percentage of people killed during these droughts were 40%in 1773-76, 42% in 1830-33, 40% in 1863-66, 15% in 1900-03, 16%in 1920-22, 15% in 1940-43 and 18% in 1946-48. In 1951 the status of Cape Verde was changed from a colony to an overseas province of portugal. Most of the inhabitants had assimilado status which was founded on the notion of civilisation through assimilation of the Portuguese Culture. Therefore they had a easier acess to education than the Africans from other colonies, so the majority of the population was literate at the time of independence.Their higher level education coupled with the poverty and lack of work in the at home prompted many to take low paid jobs in Portugal or executive positions in other Portuguese colonies. These factors sowed the seed of nationalism. Cape Verdean intellectuals later founded the African Party for the liberation of Guinea Bissau and Cape Verde. Many young Cape Verdeans studying in Portugal, enrolled in the

    Cabo Verde Introduction...
Luiz Silva Extract de W hen the discoverer arrived on the first island neither naked men nor naked women, innocent and afraid, were laying in wait behind the vegetation,
said the poet Jorge Barbosa in the Claridade. T he Portuguese reached Cape Verde in 1460, sailing from port to port, cove to cove, fighting bloody battles or trading with the African kingdoms, who were slave traders too. The poets of the dry rocky Cape Verde Islands cultivated the myth of a paradise lost, with its garden of golden fruit.
I sing people of Atlantis A voice which clasps the heart of the water sprites And dances on the pureness of your shore !

I I I T hrough his poetry in Creole and his mornas, some of the most beautiful laments ever written, Eugenio Tavares is also one of the great defenders of the Cape Verde language. On the islands, he is idolised almost like a god, in particular on the island where he was born, Brava. He turned the art of love into a revolutionary weapon to fight against inequalities in a society where the vestiges of racism only disappeared because the emigrants intervened, on both the economic and cultural levels.
