Culture The vestiges of Portuguese culture are much more evident than those of African culture, although this is less true on S£o Tiago Island, which has a significant number of people of African ancestry. Most people in Cape Verde are creole; about a quarter are of African descent. Portuguese is the official language. People also speak Crioulo, an Africanised Creole Portuguese. For its tiny size, Cape Verde has produced a wealth of literature. The works written prior to independence focused on liberation and were mainly in Crioulo. Postindependence, the themes expanded to include the mass emigration from the islands by the 'Americanos' (those Cape Verdeans who've gone to the Americas) and racial discrimination. Some writers, such as Kaoberdiano Dambara, continue to write in Crioulo, while others, such as On©simo Silveira, write in Portuguese, the dominant literary tongue. by Tracy Bowens Many come, many go, but those with perseverance succeed. The word is out. The Islands of Cape Verde are a fertile ground for investors. Both individuals and corporations looking for the potential that exists with the special balance of enough development to get things done, but not so much development that there is nothing left to do, are leaving their native countries and settling on the Islands. However, if you want to see your dream come true, you'll have to do more than just show up. Here are some steps that may help you along the way. Research the Islands. Even though you may hear from word of mouth that the Islands are a good place to invest, treat this as you would any other investment. Research the Islands to find out if the environment is appealing to you. Cape Verde's U. S. Embassy's web site

, a transnational non-profit cultural association working in the area of culture and development mainly in the ACP countries, and the Pentagrama music school at Praia. Other partner organisations in Praia, Mindelo and Rotterdam may also participate.
The Cimboa is a very special instrument because in Cape Verde there is nothing like it. It is a bowed instrument that probably comes from the mussulmane part of the continent and it's sound and music resemble partly to an arabic or middle-eastern sound. It is made from the branch of tree that constitutes the arm. At one end of the arm there is a calabash covered with goat skin that works as the sound box. A single string made of horse hair joins the top end of the arm and the calabash at the bottom, passing through a bridge that sits on the goat skin of the calabash. Fingers press the string without contact to the arm while a bow with a similar string produces sound by friction in the same way as a violin is played.
CAPE VERDIAN INSTRUMENTS - Musical instruments are an integral part of the cultural manifestations of the life of Cape Verdian communities. They play an important role in family and social celebrations. In the popular festivals held in each island, in tribute to the patron saints, drums beat to exhaustion and string instruments are widely used, such as the guitar, the viola, the cavaquinho and the violin. Drums and other percussion instruments are also quite popular.

Cape Verde and the boundaries of Europe
There's an interesting essay at Randy McDonald's about Cape Verde's European Union prospects , which are better than one might think . Cape Verde has a creole population descended from imported Portuguese and imported Africans, its culture contains as many Portuguese as African elements, and its people spread throughout the Portuguese empire and to Portugal itself through their role as laborers and minor civil servants. This, combined with its democratic government, relative economic stability and small population, has led Portuguese president Mario Soares to make a serious proposal for its accession: Mr Soares and Mr Moreira, two of Portugal's main senator, in interviews with 'A Capital' strongly defended an EU membership for Cape Verde on the longer run "for political reasons, rather regarding identity than distance." Cape Verde, they said, was much closer to Europe than for example Turkey. The two Portuguese senators said they hoped that Durão Barroso, the current President of the European Commission and also a Portuguese citizen, would give his support to this cause. Mr Soares and Mr Moreira assured they would remain "supports and spokesmen" of this project.

Cape Verde
The Republic of Cape Verde is a republic located on an archipelago of the North Atlantic Ocean , off the western coast of Africa . The previously uninhabited islands were discovered and colonized by the Portuguese in the 15th century ; they subsequently became a trading center for African slaves . Most Cape Verdeans descend from both groups. "Cape Verde" is named for Cap-Vert , now in Senegal , the westernmost point of Africa. Cape Verde: It's People, Geography, and Culture
By Melody Lassalle
The Cape Verde Islands are officially known as Republica de Cabo Verde. The capital is Praia. The islands llie in the Atlantic Ocean, west of Senegal. Cape Verde consists of two island groups, the Barlavento and the Sotavento. The Barlavento group consists of Santo Antao, Sao Vicente, Santa Luzia, Sal, Boa Vista, and Sao Nicolau. The Sotavento group consists of Sao Tiago, Maio, Fogo, and Brava. The terrain is mostly mountainous.
The earliest habitants of Cape Verde were the Portuguese people who came in 1462. Soon after, West African slaves were brought to the islands. Slavery was abolished here in 1876. A penal colony was set up in the islands in the 1500s. Many of the convicts stayed once they completed their sentence. Portugal also sent "undesirables" such as political adversaries, criminals, etc., to the islands.
The population was estimated at 412,137 in 2003. The people of Cape Verde are referred to as Caboverdeans (aka Caboverdeanos and Cape Verdeans). They consist of 3 groups: Creole 71% (a mixture of African and European ancestry), African 28%, and European 1%. Caboverdeans are primarily Roman Catholic with some mingling with African religions. The literacy rate in the islands is one of the highest throughout Africa at 71.6% (1995).

Water and Culture
by Brandon Lundy , São Domingos, Cape Verde "Morna" is Cape Verdean music straight from the heart. Every time I hear it, I get choked up, and I'm not even Cape Verdean. The primary instruments include the violin, guitar, and most importantly, the voice. The music is slow and melancholic. The lyrics tell the story of Cape Verde: slavery, the lack of work, the strength of the sea, and yes, the extreme lack of potable water throughout history. Drought is a word Cape Verdeans know too well. It has caused mass migration to other countries leaving loved ones behind to pray and sing about their precious water. I was living with my host family when I was first exposed to the Morna. I was sitting in a room beside the roof, it was dark outside. I heard a sad, beautiful song coming from the roof, so I went to explore. As I stepped onto the roof, there, in the dark, was about ten people playing instruments and singing. My host father was one of the men playing a guitar. I sat down, mesmerized by the sad music coming from these ten guys. As I looked around, I wasn't alone. A large crowd gathered, including some personnel from our Peace Corps office. The music played on until morning and I remained, fixated on a music reflecting a culture's hardships and realizing the most basic need shared by everyone in the worldwater.
