Grammy for Cape Verde's Cesária Évora Cesária Évora:
"Best Contemporary World Music Album of 2004" afrol News , 9 February The album "Voz d'Amor" (the Voice of Love) by Cape Verdean singer Cesária Évora last night won the prestigious Grammy award under the category of Best Contemporary World Music. After having been nominated five times, Ms Évora finally won world recognition for the finest of Cape Verde's culture. The 63-year-old artist has earned the nicknames "the Barefoot Diva" because of her preference for appearing on stage barefoot and "the international Ambassador of Cape Verde" for making the archipelago's characteristic music known in the outside world.
Last night, Ms Évora was granted one of the world's most prestigious music awards after five previous nominations. At the annual Grammy Awards, celebrated in Los Angeles, USA, her album "Voz d'Amor" was named the Best Contemporary World Music Album of 2004.
"Voz d'Amor" is the ninth album released by the Cape Verdean artist since she re-launched her music career in the 1980s, in addition to two compilations. During the latest decade, Ms Évora has appeared on concerts and studios all over the world, however without forgetting her Cape Verdean roots.

One young man of nineteen years of age went to visit his sister the day before the trip and gave her his picture as a memory keepsake. His words to her, upon handing over the picture, were: "I brought you this picture because we're going to die on Matilde. Remember me." With tears in his eyes, he embraced his sister, who also had tears in her eyes, and asked her to pray for their souls. Fifty six brave men died trying to reach the shores of New Bedford, Massachusetts to begin a better life where opportunities were plentiful. World War 11 had a serious impact on the lives of Cape Verdeans who were waiting for an opportunity to return to the United States. Ships were not taking chances on the mined waters of the Atlantic. The shortage of food on the islands, because of the severe drought, the lack of medication and doctors and little to no contact with the United States forced drastic and sad decisions to travel on small run down ships such as Matilde. Most of the Packet Ships were reconditioned ships from the schooner days that were bought by Cape Verdeans and put into the Atlantic Route(United States-Cape Verde and back). These ships braved the storms and the high seas to take food, clothing and other goods to Cape Verde Islands. Some of the ships were built in Cape Verde. The Island of Brava was prominent in this venture. In the village of Furna, where there was a seaport, "Porto Di Furna", ship building was a big business. Prominent in this trade were talented men such as Nho Mano Di Nha Queta and Nho Zuric Vitorino. The shipyard belonged to Nho Mano De Nha Queta who would build ships for prominent Bravenses such as Antonio Martins(Nho Totoi Nha Tui) and Nho Pepe Di Lem. Most of the ships were small but a few such as Marlene were large enough to make trips to the United States.

47. Cape Verde History And Culture

http://www.spiamedia.com/cape_verde.html
HOME Cape Verde History and Culture Lying 240 nautical miles off the coast of West Africa, the tiny, drought stricken archipelago of ten islands remained in the backwaters of world history until l975 when the islands gained independence from Portugal. Uninhabited prior to discovery in l462 by the Portuguese, Cape Verdeans developed as a mix of Africans, Portuguese, and other European voyagers to the islands. This volcanic archipelago, bathed in dazzling natural colors and light, is a land of stark beauty-soaring mountains, desert terrain and endless beaches. Yet for Cape Verdeans these five hundred years also represent devastating cycles of drought, starvation and death where up to half the total population of the islands died.
The connection between New England and the Cape Verde islands began in earnest after the American Revolution. Desperate for crews to work in the dangerous and low-paying whaling industry, whaling vessels from New Bedford and Nantucket regularly sailed to Cape Verde to pick up sailors. These early ties to New England made the United States the primary point of debarkation for Cape Verdeans. The trickle of immigration to New Bedford and New England in the early l800s turned into a flood at the turn of the century, as Cape Verdeans fled cycles of severe drought, starvation, perennial economic hardship and colonial neglect.
They came across the Atlantic to New England on voyages lasting up to three months on packet ships of dubious seaworthiness, arriving in the ports of New Bedford, MA and Providence, RI, the oldest and largest Cape Verdean communities in America.

People of Cape Verde The people of Cape Verde, more than two-thirds of them, consists of mixed African and European ancestry and are known as Creoles, or mestiços. The remaining population is mainly made up of people with African ancestry. Though the official language is Portuguese, the national language is Crioulo, a Creole dialect of archaic Portuguese incorporating many African elements. Roman Catholicism is the dominant religion and literacy is spread among some 77 percent of the population. Flag of Cape Verde The flag of Cape Verde consists of three horizontal bands -light blue at the top (double width), white with a horizontal red stripe in the middle and again light blue at the bottom. A circle of 10 yellow five-pointed stars is present in the center on the hoist end of the red stripe and extends into the upper and lower blue bands.
Please click here to view the Flag of Cape Verde
Economy of Cape Verde Agriculture forms the main source of economy, despite the fact that cultivable land accounts for only 9.7 percent of the total land, which is again affected by frequent droughts. The crops produced include maize and beans and also sweet potatoes, coconuts, potatoes, cassava, and dates. Bananas are also grown for export, and sugarcane is raised for the making of rum. Apart from this, Cape Verde has rich fishing potential as it is located in the midst of fishing grounds, but the industry has yet to develop. Salt is mined on Sal, Boa Vista, and Maio, with annual production of about 7,000 metric tons. However, depressed by the lack of steady markets and readily available ocean transportation, the production has declined to less than one-quarter of the level achieved in the 1970s.

The uninhabited volcanic islands were discovered and colonized by the Portuguese Bartolomeo Dias in the 15th century. Before the only visitors were Senegalese fishermen. The islands subsequently became a trading center for African slaves and later an important coaling and resupply stop for whaling and transatlantic shipping. Most Cape Verdeans have both African and Portuguese antecedents. Independence was achieved in 1975.

http://www.africatravelling.net/cape_verde/praia/praia_culture.htm
Praia - Culture The culture of the Cape Verdian people reflects a symbiosis of five centuries of both European and African influences; this interlinkage is to be found in the various expressions of popular culture. Cultural traits of much interest are present in the everyday life of the population, in the manufacture of items of everyday use, and in customs associated with survival and leisure activities. The traditional objects, produced for common use and very much sought after by visitors, reflect an experience made difficult by the drought, which is an omnipresent fact of life in Cape Verde. Basketmaking using cane is highly diversified, with a variety of baskets for common and decorative use. Crafts of coconut shells also include decorative and utilitarian objects of great interest. Weaving, which won great honors in the 18th century, and cotton goods, in the traditional white and indigo blue. Also prized is the tapestry work produced on the island of Sao Vicente. The population benefits from a diet marked by diverse combinations of the traditional popular food productscorn, beans, sweet potato, cassava, fish, and various meatsenriched by the flavors of traditional liqueurs and sweets. The main traditional plate is the cachupa, widely consumed by the entire population, with various ingredients depending on the time of day and the customer's purchasing power. Music is an essential cultural expression of the life of Cape Verdian communities, an integral part of family and social celebrations, and of the popular festivals held in each island, in tribute to the patron saints, such as Sao JSm, with drums beat to exhaustion to mark the festival of the solstice (June 24). String instruments are widely used, such as the guitar, the viola, the cavaquinho, or small guitar, and the violin; drums and other percussion instruments are also quite popular.
